Chapter 300: No Debts
"Grandmother, Mother, I'm back!"
Before they saw her, they heard her voice.
Upon hearing the lively and cheerful sound, the faces of Old Madam Yan and Madam Li, who were discussing Yan Wenxiu's marriage, immediately lit up with smiles, and they both turned towards the door.
The other women in the room, including Sun Shi, Wu Shi, and the three Yan sisters, also looked towards the door.
The door curtain lifted, and a smiling Daohua, wearing a blue cloak, walked in, with Yan Wenxiu and his two brothers following behind.
Madam Li quickly stood up, "Why didn't you tell us you were coming back?"
Daohua smiled and walked over to take her mother's arm. "Mother, are we supposed to notify you when we return to our own home?"
Madam Li nodded, tapping Daohua on the forehead. "That's not what I meant. What I meant was, we should have sent someone to pick you up at the dock."
Daohua chuckled, "But we had Big Brother and the others with us. Why trouble the family to make an extra trip?"
Madam Li gave her a teasing look before pushing Daohua towards Old Madam Yan. "Go greet your grandmother. She has been talking about you a lot these past few days."
Daohua let go of her mother and walked over to greet Old Madam Yan. She gave a formal bow, then paid respects to Sun Shi and Wu Shi, before sitting down next to her grandmother. "Grandmother, I've missed you so much."
Old Madam Yan couldn't hold back her smile. "Miss me? I think you've been enjoying yourself too much in the provincial capital!"
Daohua leaned against her grandmother's arm, smiling brightly. "Not at all. I think about you every day. What about you, Grandmother? Did you miss me?"
Old Madam Yan snorted. "An old woman like me is too busy. I don't have time to miss you."
Daohua sighed dramatically. "I knew it, Grandmother already started to dislike me."
Old Madam Yan gave her a side-eyed glance and gave her a light tap on the forehead. "Of course, I dislike you!"
Below them, the three younger Yan siblings lowered their heads, seeing how their grandmother's face lit up as soon as Daohua returned.
During Daohua's absence, the younger sisters had spent time accompanying their grandmother every day. Though Old Madam Yan treated them kindly, it was nowhere near as warm as her affection for Daohua.
At this point, Yan Wenxiu and his two brothers stepped forward to greet Old Madam Yan.
Old Madam Yan smiled and invited them to sit, then asked them about their time in the provincial capital.
After some pleasant conversation, Sun Shi interjected. "You're just in time. We were just talking about arranging a marriage for Wenxiu."
Daohua froze for a moment, looking at her eldest brother, who appeared somewhat uncomfortable. She turned to Madam Li. "Mother, did you already start looking for a match for Big Brother?"
Madam Li smiled. "It's just an idea for now." She looked at her eldest son with pride, her eyes shining with appreciation.
Sending her eldest son to the capital had been the right decision. After meeting with the second master of the Zhou family, Wenxiu had caught the eye of Master Han from the Marquis of Zhaode's household.
Old Madam Yan looked at her eldest grandson with a smile. "In the blink of an eye, Wenxiu is already eighteen. It's time for him to think about marriage."
Daohua quickly asked, "Whose daughter is it?"
Madam Li replied, "I said it's just an idea for now. There's no official match yet."
Daohua saw that her mother didn't seem to want to talk further, so she didn't press the matter. Instead, her gaze turned to her eldest brother.
The younger siblings exchanged glances, smirking as they watched Yan Wenxiu.
Although Yan Wenxiu considered himself thick-skinned enough, he still felt a little awkward with his younger siblings staring at him. Unable to avoid it, he stood up and said, "Grandmother, Mother, Aunt, I’ll go tidy up the courtyard."
Seeing her son uncomfortable, Madam Li thoughtfully suggested he leave. Yan Wenxiu was followed by Yan Wenxiu's brothers, Yan Wenkai and Yan Wentao, who also excused themselves.
Old Madam Yan turned to Daohua. "Alright, go take care of your own courtyard. We’ll talk later tonight."
Soon after, Madam Li took Daohua to the main courtyard.
The back courtyard of the manor was much larger than the one in the local Prefectural office. From Old Madam Yan's Songhe Courtyard to the main courtyard, it took a full quarter of an hour to walk.
"This back courtyard is so big! Isn’t that a bit excessive?" Daohua asked in surprise.
Madam Li smiled. "It's not excessive. The Ningmen Manor covers a large area, so the manor itself is naturally larger than other estates."
Daohua nodded. "So, Mother, where will I be staying?"
Ping Tong smiled as she replied, "Of course, the eldest young lady will stay in the most exquisite courtyard in the back."
The most majestic courtyard was reserved for the master and mistress of the house, while the most comfortable courtyard was given to Old Madam Yan.
There were enough courtyards for each of the young ladies and gentlemen to have one of their own. However, the eldest young lady and eldest young master had slightly larger and more favorable courtyards.
The only ones who shared a courtyard were the two concubines, Concubine Liu and Concubine Lin.
Before long, mother and daughter arrived at the main courtyard.
"What are all these things?"
Looking at the various items placed in the courtyard, Madam Li was a bit surprised.
Daohua explained, "Some are gifts prepared by my uncle and aunt, and some are moving gifts from Xiao Yeyang to our family."
Madam Li first glanced at the gifts from the Li family and smiled, instructing Ping Tong to move them to the storeroom. She then began examining the gifts from Xiao Yeyang.
When she saw the dressing mirror and vanity table inlaid with carved rosewood, her expression immediately changed. "These are too extravagant!"
"Please don't worry, Mother, just accept them!"
Yan Wenxiu and Yan Wenkai walked in, smiling.
Seeing her two sons, Madam Li’s expression brightened. "Is the courtyard arranged?"
Yan Wenxiu smiled. "Mother has prepared everything, so there was nothing much for us to do."
Yan Wenkai also chimed in, "Mother, you’ve worked hard."
Madam Li’s smile grew even wider. "What’s hard about it? It's my pleasure to arrange the courtyard for you." She then turned her attention back to the dressing mirror and vanity table.
Since her eldest son had said to accept them, she decided not to dwell on it. She called for the maid, "Take the mirror and vanity table to the eldest young lady's courtyard."
Daohua quickly intervened, "Mother, I only need the vanity table. The mirror on it is big enough; you can keep the full-length mirror for yourself."
Madam Li shot her a glance. "I’m fine with just a bronze mirror, there’s no need for a full-length one."
Daohua shook her head. "A bronze mirror doesn’t reflect as clearly as a full-length mirror. If you need to go out or entertain visiting ladies, you must look well-groomed."
"That's right, Mother, this is my little sister’s filial piety. Please accept it." Yan Wenxiu added at the right moment.
Yan Wenkai nodded as well. "Exactly, one for each of us, it’s just right."
Seeing that all three of her children were insisting, Madam Li smiled and agreed. "Alright, I’ll accept your kind intentions."
"What fabric is this? It's so beautiful!"
Ping Xiao opened a box and inside were five pieces of fabric that were different from the usual silks.
Madam Li gasped, "This is kesi (woven silk)!"
She recognized this material because the royal fan was made of it, so she knew what it was.
Madam Li picked up a piece of lotus-colored kesi, but her expression hesitated. "This is too extravagant for a moving gift from the young prince."
"And the house from before," she continued, "You said it only cost three to four thousand taels of silver, but when your father inquired in the capital, it would cost at least twenty to thirty thousand to buy one like it."
Daohua’s eyes widened in surprise. "It’s that expensive?!"
Yan Wenxiu continued, "The prices in the capital are naturally higher, and that house is located near the inner city, so the location is excellent."
Daohua froze for a moment, then patted her chest. "Well, it’s good I gave him the formula for the glass. As long as he can find someone to make the glass, we won’t owe him anything."
"Owe?"
Upon hearing the word, Yan Wenxiu looked up at his sister. Seeing that she seemed concerned about owing the young prince a favor, he immediately felt relieved.
It was clear that the young prince was showing too much attention to his sister, and he had been worried that some feelings might develop.
But now, seeing that his sister had no such intentions, he felt a bit more at ease.
"What glass formula?" Madam Li sharply picked up on her daughter’s words.
Yan Wenkai spoke up first. "It’s the formula for making glass that sister saw in a novel."
Madam Li looked skeptical. "Isn’t that formula fake?"
Glass items are so expensive, who would put the formula for making them in a novel?
Daohua, of course, didn’t want to elaborate too much. She smiled vaguely, "Who knows if it’s real or fake, let Xiao Yeyang try it out. If it works, then he will benefit."
Madam Li was somewhat speechless.
Yan Wenkai also pouted. "Big sister, you’re not being fair. You spoke so confidently before, and I thought glass was really easy to make. Turns out you were just brushing off the young prince?"
Daohua immediately retorted, "I wasn’t brushing him off. Anything in this world needs repeated experimentation, right?"
Yan Wenkai raised an eyebrow. "What if the young prince can’t make it?"
Daohua paused for a moment, then replied, "Then it’s because the craftsman he hired isn’t good enough. Just keep experimenting."
Madam Li smiled and stopped the bickering between the two siblings. She looked at the five pieces of kesi in the box. Three of them were clearly meant for young girls, while the other two had deeper colors.
"These lotus-colored, sky blue, and pale green ones should go to the eldest young lady’s courtyard. The golden brown one will be for Old Madam Yan’s clothes, and I’ll keep the royal blue one."
After distributing the items, Madam Li led her three children into the house.
