Chapter 226: Asking for a Gift

Chapter 226: Asking for a Gift

As soon as Yan Wenkai heard that Daohua had spent so much time preparing a gift for her own birthday, he immediately became interested. "Where is it? Big Sister, let me see it!"

Daohua was not pleased. "Didn't you just say it was nothing special? I'll change it as soon as I get home."

Yan Wenkai quickly grabbed her arm and shook it. "No, no, I was just kidding! Please, Big Sister, show me the pouch you embroidered for me."

He said, making a pitiful face.

"Our family, Eldest Brother and Fifth Brother have pouches embroidered by their third sisters, Second Brother has one from his second sister, and Third Brother carries the one you made for him before. Though it was a bit ugly, at least it was made by you. But me—I'm the only one in the family who has a pouch bought from outside."

Seeing his pitiful look, Daohua hesitated. "But tomorrow is your birthday. I’ll give it to you then."

Yan Wenkai interrupted her, "It doesn't matter if it's today or tomorrow, I want to see it now!" He started shaking her arm again.

Xiao Yeyang, who had been silently watching, didn’t say anything. He was also a bit curious. To be honest, he had known Yan Wenkai for a long time, but he had never seen Daohua's embroidery work.

Daohua finally pulled her arm away. "Fine, stop shaking me. I'll ask Man'er to get it."

When Man'er got the signal, she immediately turned and left.

In a short while, Man'er returned with a male-style moon-white pouch.

"Let me see!" Yan Wenkai eagerly grabbed the pouch and started examining it. "Hey, what kind of animal is this?"

Xiao Yeyang also leaned forward to take a look, and upon seeing the adorable panda on the pouch, he immediately laughed. "That's a giant panda, but it does look a bit like you."

Daohua was slightly surprised. "You know about pandas?"

Xiao Yeyang shrugged. "I saw it in the Sichuan county annals. But how about you? Did you read about it in a storybook?"

Daohua gave him a look of approval. "Of course, I read it in a travelogue."

Xiao Yeyang teased, "You sure read a lot of storybooks."

Daohua retorted immediately, "Not as much as you! You read so much that you even study local county annals."

At this point, with Man'er's help, the pouch was flipped to the other side, revealing a majestic tiger embroidered on it.

"This one is good! This one’s temperament is more like mine!"

Daohua and Xiao Yeyang both looked over, paused for a moment, and then simultaneously shook their heads. "The panda (or giant panda) suits you better."

They both chuckled at the same time.

Yan Wenkai, however, was dissatisfied and muttered, "What are you two saying? I clearly look more like a mountain tiger. Forget it, I won’t argue with you. I’ll go ask Eldest Brother and Third Brother."

With that, he dashed off.

Just as he ran out of the pavilion, he quickly turned around and came back, taking both pots of ink chrysanthemums with him.

Daohua laughed and shook her head. When she turned around, she found Xiao Yeyang staring at her as if he had something to say, but hesitating. She asked in confusion, "What’s wrong?"

Xiao Yeyang finally spoke, "You put a lot of thought into your Fourth Brother's birthday gift."

Daohua responded naturally, "He is my Fourth Brother."

Xiao Yeyang seemed to want to say more but stopped.

Daohua frowned and asked, "What’s going on? Just speak up!"

Hearing this, Xiao Yeyang turned his head, no longer looking at her.

It was Defu, who couldn’t stand it anymore, who quietly said, "Miss Yan, you haven’t given our master any gifts on his birthday yet."

Daohua froze for a moment, then stared at Xiao Yeyang, speechless. "You never told me when your birthday was!"

Xiao Yeyang, hearing this, finally spoke up. "It’s on the first day of June."

Daohua: "I understand now. Next year, I'll definitely prepare a gift for you. Children's Day, that's easy to remember."

Xiao Yeyang's expression finally relaxed, and he asked curiously, "What kind of gift will you prepare for me?"

Daohua smiled mysteriously. "You'll know when the time comes."

Xiao Yeyang: "You can't just go outside and buy me some ink, paper, and a brush set to get rid of me. At least, it can’t be worse than Wenkai’s."

He knew it would be difficult to ask for embroidery, but secretly, he wished he could receive a double-sided pouch made by Daohua herself.

Daohua laughed, "Don't worry, I promise you won’t be disappointed."

Seeing her so confident, Xiao Yeyang couldn’t help but feel a little excited.

The day of Yan Wenkai’s birthday was bustling at the Yan household. Local officials had heard about the event and brought their children along.

After a busy two days, sending Xiao Yeyang and the others off, Madam Li and Daohua finally sighed in relief.

Madam Li, while drinking tea, said, "Thank goodness you helped me, daughter, or I’d be exhausted."

There was always a lot to do around the New Year, and they had originally planned a small family meal for Wenkai’s birthday. Who would’ve thought that so many people would come unexpectedly, and many things hadn't been prepared in advance, so they had to hurry to buy them.

Daohua smiled. "I was just helping Mother out with some errands. You’re the one who’s really amazing."

Madam Li thought for a moment and said, "Once we finish reviewing the accounts from the estate and the shop, everything will settle down. Then we can relax and prepare for the New Year."

After a bit more conversation, the mother and daughter parted ways, and Daohua returned to her own courtyard.

"Man'er, go call Sixth Brother for me."

Daohua took out the land deed Xiao Yeyang had given her. The over three thousand acres were located outside Xingzhou. She needed to see what could be planted there.

Soon, Qin Xiao Liu arrived. "Miss, you called for me?"

Daohua handed him the written address. "Sixth Brother, go check out this place. See what the land is like and the surrounding environment."

Qin Xiao Liu didn’t ask any questions. He took the note and left.

The next day, he returned with the news.

"Miss, the land you asked about is all excellent dry land. The soil is fertile and it’s close to a water source."

Daohua listened attentively. After hearing his report, she didn’t say much, and a few days later, while out gathering red dates, she personally visited the site.

After her visit, she told Qin Xiao Liu, "Sixth Brother, I want to plant medicinal herbs there next year. For now, help me see if you can hire any herb farmers."

"Also, help me gather the seeds for various medicinal herbs. Once you’ve collected them, bring them to me. If we run out of money during the process, just ask Man'er for it."

Qin Xiao Liu nodded, committing everything Daohua had said to memory.

"Miss, weren’t you growing medicinal herbs at the estate in Danlin Village before? Why are you planting more now, and so many?"

After Qin Xiao Liu left, Man'er finally spoke up.

Daohua fell silent for a moment. "Now that we have food, we have to make sure we’re prepared in case of illness."

Chapter 225: I Can

 Chapter 225: I Can

The charcoal and tea set were quickly brought over. Daohua roasted the charcoal for a while, and once her hands warmed up, she began to brew the tea in a leisurely manner.

Master Shen was quite fond of tea tasting. Sometimes, when she arrived early for class, she would be invited to join a tea session, and she took the opportunity to learn a thing or two.

Xiao Yeyang sat across from her at the stone table, silently watching Daohua's elegant and skilled movements as she brewed the tea.

This person had both an active side and a calm side.

When she was active, she was lively and cheerful; when she was calm, she was gentle and serene.

The combination of movement and stillness didn’t seem contradictory, but instead created a unique harmony.

“Here, try the tea I made!”

Daohua poured a cup of tea for Xiao Yeyang, then widened her eyes, waiting for him to give his opinion.

Xiao Yeyang picked up the cup, took a careful sip, and looked at Daohua’s sparkling eyes, her expectant expression. He smiled faintly. “It’s decent.”

Daohua pouted, poured herself a cup, and tasted it. “It’s obviously good.”

Xiao Yeyang chuckled but said nothing. He then scrutinized Daohua’s expression and asked, “I heard you have a new sister?”

Daohua glanced at him. “You’re well-informed.”

Xiao Yeyang thought, With Yan Wenkai’s big mouth, it would be hard not to know. “Well... you’re not upset about it, are you?”

Last time, when Master Yan sent a plate of pastries to a concubine, Daohua seemed rather downcast. Now that there was another sister, who knew how she might feel?

Daohua poured herself another cup of tea before calmly responding, “Why would I be upset? Even if I were upset, what difference would it make? If she’s to be born, she’ll be born.”

Xiao Yeyang nodded. “I’m glad you think that way. I was just worried you might get stuck in a dead-end, making things difficult for yourself.”

Daohua looked up at Xiao Yeyang, narrowing her eyes. “So you think it’s no big deal if a family has several illegitimate children, is that it?”

Seeing her expression turn slightly unfriendly, Xiao Yeyang was at a loss for words. “I don’t like illegitimate children either, but it’s a common practice. What can you do about it?”

Daohua withdrew her gaze. “If you can’t change others, then change yourself. You can’t just follow along with whatever others do.”

She paused, then raised her eyes, studying Xiao Yeyang. “Since you say you don’t like illegitimate children, will you avoid taking concubines in the future?”

Xiao Yeyang was caught off guard and didn’t reply immediately.

Seeing him stumped, Daohua snorted. “All talk and no action.”

“I can,” Xiao Yeyang responded just as Yan Wenkai walked in, holding a pot of ink chrysanthemums. His loud voice quickly drowned out Xiao Yeyang’s words.

“Big sister!”

Daohua’s attention was immediately diverted, and she hurriedly stood up to meet him. “Where’s your servant? Why didn’t you let him help carry it?” As she spoke, she took the pot of chrysanthemums from him and placed it on the edge of the pavilion.

Yan Wenkai laughed. “I had him go get something else.” He turned to the stone table. “Oh, you’re having tea here. I’ll join you for a cup.”

Daohua smiled and sat back down, quickly pouring him a cup of tea.

Yan Wenkai was someone who rarely used utensils when drinking tea. He tilted his head back, emptied the cup, then smiled at Daohua, holding it out for more. “Good tea. Another cup, please.”

Daohua particularly liked this about her Fourth Brother. She quickly refilled his cup.

Xiao Yeyang shook his head and muttered, “Like an ox chewing peony.”

Yan Wenkai didn’t mind at all, laughing. “I like drinking like this. No need to pretend to be all refined.”

“Fourth Brother, good job!” Daohua gave him a supportive look.

Yan Wenkai blinked and gave a playful smile, signaling that he understood, then began to chuckle.

Seeing the siblings exchanging looks and teasing each other, Xiao Yeyang became slightly displeased and said to Yan Wenkai, "Aren't you supposed to deliver the flowers? Why are you still here?"

Yan Wenkai waved his hand. "No hurry, I’ll drink a couple more cups of tea before going."

Daohua quickly refilled their cups.

"Ai, it would be great if we had some venison. We could roast it this afternoon," Yan Wenkai suddenly said, looking at Xiao Yeyang. "Prince, we’re allowed to hunt in Wuhua Mountain, right?"

Xiao Yeyang shook his head. "My uncle isn’t here, so I can’t enter the hunting grounds."

Yan Wenkai sighed in disappointment and took another sip of tea.

Daohua turned to Xiao Yeyang. "If your uncle isn’t back, doesn’t that mean you'll spend the New Year alone in the palace again?"

Yan Wenkai also looked over.

Daohua continued, "Why don’t you come celebrate the New Year at my place? After all, it’s livelier with more people."

Yan Wenkai immediately nodded. "Yes, yes, Prince, come celebrate the New Year at my house!"

Xiao Yeyang knew they were genuinely inviting him, but he still shook his head. "This year... I won’t be alone, so I won’t come."

Daohua was surprised. "Your uncle is coming back?"

Xiao Yeyang didn’t answer directly but changed the topic. "Speaking of my uncle, I should thank you. If it weren’t for your batch of wheat seeds, my uncle might have faced punishment." He turned to look at Defu.

Defu immediately took out a land deed from his chest and handed it to Xiao Yeyang.

Xiao Yeyang took the deed and handed it to Daohua.

"What is this?" Daohua took it, only to find it was a deed for three thousand acres of land.

Upon realizing this, she hurriedly returned it to Xiao Yeyang, her face full of displeasure. "Xiao Yeyang, what are you doing? Didn’t we agree that we’re friends? Those seeds were a gift from me to you."

Xiao Yeyang quickly explained, "The land deed isn’t from me, it’s from my uncle. He said it was for the wheat seeds."

Hearing this, Daohua’s expression softened. "Ah, it’s from your uncle... well, I can accept that. But three thousand acres is quite a lot. It feels like too much to handle."

Xiao Yeyang glanced at her and said indifferently, "It’s not too much. You helped my uncle a lot. Originally, he wanted to give ten thousand acres, but since we’re not that close, I convinced him to reduce it."

Daohua was stunned, her lips moving as she murmured, then she glared at him with a bit of resentment. "You’ve got some nerve, cutting down the amount by seven thousand acres just like that."

Yan Wenkai also looked dissatisfied. "Yeah, that’s a pretty big cut."

Xiao Yeyang didn’t reply but pushed the deed back towards Daohua.

When Daohua frowned and didn’t take it, Yan Wenkai quickly comforted her. "Big Sister, don’t be upset. When I grow up, I’ll buy more land for you. For now, just make do with this three thousand acres."

Daohua glanced at her straightforward Fourth Brother, feeling a bit speechless. Her Fourth Brother believed everything people said.

Xiao Yeyang didn’t want to dwell on this issue and looked at Daohua. "Tomorrow is your Fourth Brother's birthday. What gift did you prepare for him?"

Yan Wenkai immediately perked up, his face full of anticipation.

Daohua smiled and replied, "A pouch."

At this, Yan Wenkai’s face dropped, clearly disappointed. "Just a pouch?"

Wang Man’er, smiling, reminded, "The pouch was embroidered by Miss using double-sided and triple-thread stitching, and it took her several months to finish."

Chapter 224: Magnanimity

 Chapter 224: Magnanimity

On the 17th of the twelfth month, the three brothers of the Yan family, Yan Wenxiu, Yan Wenkai, and Yan Wenbin, returned home.

This time, they brought back quite a few people—not only familiar faces like Xiao Yeyang, Dong Yuanxuan, and Su Hongxin, but also other students from the academy.

This year, Wangyue Academy closed for the winter break on the 15th of the twelfth month, and some students who weren't in a hurry to go home decided to travel around together.

Coincidentally, the 18th of the twelfth month was Yan Wenkai's birthday, so the students who were close friends with the Yan brothers in the academy came along to Xingzhou to celebrate.

Although Madam Li had to busy herself organizing the courtyard and arranging accommodations, her smile never faded from her face.

It was a good thing that her son was well-liked in the academy and had made so many friends.

Even Yan Zhigao looked on with satisfaction.

Connections—these were the networks his three children would rely on when they stepped into the world.

At the main courtyard, Daohua was helping prepare tea and snacks, arranging for the maids to deliver them to her older brother's courtyard while watching Madam Li move busily around.

“Miss, third master, and fourth master are getting more and more successful. They’re becoming more and more proficient at receiving guests. The laughter and joy in the eldest master’s courtyard is endless now.”

After delivering the snacks, Wang Man’er smiled and shared what she had seen in Yan Wenxiu’s courtyard with Daohua.

After hearing this, Daohua smiled. “No wonder everyone fights to send their children to Wangyue Academy. Birds of a feather flock together; when you’re around excellent people often, you’ll naturally restrain yourself, work harder, and improve over time.”

Students in Wangyue Academy were either from prestigious families or had genuine talents. Either way, they had their own shining points.

The more you interact with such people, the more you could learn from their strengths. If one was willing, improving wasn't impossible.

Wang Man’er continued, “The eldest young master is very much the big brother, always looking after the second and fifth masters, introducing them to the academy students one by one.”

Daohua nodded, not offering much opinion.

Her older brother was a very responsible person. He had a strong sense of duty toward the family's honor, and anything that could benefit the Yan family’s prosperity, he would do.

However, promoting his younger brothers had both advantages and disadvantages.

The advantage was, of course, that if the younger brothers became successful, it would benefit the Yan family. The downside was that no one liked to remain in the shadows. Many people who had achieved success became arrogant, and it wasn’t uncommon for younger brothers to threaten the position of the elder.

The key here was whether the eldest brother could keep his younger siblings in check.

At the same time, in Zheguili Courtyard.

Zhou Chengye, with a sigh, looked at Yan Wenxiu. “Your heart is quite broad,” he said, then glanced at Yan Wenbin, who was chatting animatedly with several classmates.

Yan Wenxiu smiled. “My family is built on a shallow foundation, so we need the male heirs to work together and support each other. Fifth Brother has great talent in learning. Letting him interact more with others will help broaden his horizons.”

Zhou Chengye asked, “Aren’t you worried that he might threaten you in the future?” He paused and coughed awkwardly. “I’ve heard a lot of gossip about noble families. Some fathers favor their illegitimate sons, and if the illegitimate son is capable, the legitimate eldest son might not inherit the family business. I’ve heard a little about your family’s situation, so I think you understand what I mean, right?”

Yan Wenxiu smiled and raised an eyebrow. “What, do you think I can’t compete with my Fifth Brother?”

Zhou Chengye was taken aback. Seeing the confidence and assurance in Yan Wenxiu's expression, he immediately laughed and said, “I was being narrow-minded, only thinking about the inner courtyard, and completely overlooked your own talents.”

Yan Wenxiu shook his head. "Your family’s situation is different from mine. Naturally, you consider things differently. If my family had your foundation and connections, I wouldn’t let my younger brothers rise either—it would be too destabilizing for the family."

"Our family is in a tough spot. Third Brother and Fourth Brother are pursuing the martial arts path. If I want any help, I can only promote the other two brothers."

Zhou Chengye nodded. "You’ve thought this through well."

Yan Wenxiu sighed inwardly. It was impossible not to think things through. The more he interacted with the scions of noble families, the more he realized the smallness of the Yan family. Any slight wind or rain could undo all that his father had worked so hard to achieve.

The Yan family’s ability to withstand risks was still too weak.

At that moment, they saw Xiao Yeyang and Yan Wenkai walking toward the courtyard gate, chatting and laughing.

“Prince Xiao, Wenkai, where are you two heading?” Yan Wenxiu asked.

Yan Wenkai responded, "It’s that fellow Hongda. He mentioned the ink chrysanthemums just now, and immediately started urging me to bring them over. So, I’m going to Grandmother’s to pick them up."

Seeing Yan Wenxiu glance at him, Xiao Yeyang casually said, “Writing poetry and composing riddles is boring. I’m just taking a stroll.”

Yan Wenxiu offered, “Shall I send a servant to fetch them?”

Yan Wenkai quickly waved his hand. “A servant wouldn’t know which pot to choose. Several people just said their flowers were more beautiful than those in our courtyard. I need to pick the best one and show them.”

“Our family may not have much else, but as for flowers...” he said, looking at Zhou Chengye, “Brother Zhou, you’re here too. Tell us, do your family’s flowers compare to ours?”

Zhou Chengye chuckled and shook his head. "In terms of quantity and how they bloom, of course, they’re no match. But if we’re talking about rarities, then our flowers are definitely a bit more special."

Yan Wenxiu immediately puffed up with pride. “That’s right! Hongda’s family only has one pot of green plum, and he dares to compete with me.”

Zhou Chengye added, “His is a rare variety.”

Yan Wenxiu scoffed, “A rare variety is still a flower, isn’t it? As long as it’s a flower, it’s meant to be admired. Obviously, the one that blooms the most beautifully is the best. Alright, I’m done talking. We’ll be back soon.” He said, then quickly headed out of the courtyard.

Xiao Yeyang smiled and leisurely followed behind.

Along the way, Xiao Yeyang noticed Daohua walking from another direction toward them. He immediately stopped and pointed toward a nearby pavilion, saying, “I’ll sit in the pavilion for a while. You can go to Grandmother’s to fetch the flowers.”

Yan Wenxiu didn’t see Daohua and nodded. “Alright, wait for me. I’ll be back soon.”

As Yan Wenxiu walked away, Xiao Yeyang made his way to the pavilion to sit.

Meanwhile, Daohua and Wang Man’er were walking toward the kitchen. From a distance, they saw Xiao Yeyang and Yan Wenkai, and Daohua was about to wave and greet them when she saw her Fourth Brother quickly leave.

“What are you doing sitting in the pavilion? There’s no charcoal fire here; aren’t you cold?” Daohua walked into the pavilion.

Xiao Yeyang glanced at Daohua and pouted. “It’s boring sitting in your brother’s courtyard. I came out to take a walk.”

Hearing this, Daohua immediately smiled. Gatherings in the past were always centered around composing poems or riddles, and if one liked it, it was fine, but if not, it could feel like torture.

Clearly, Xiao Yeyang wasn’t fond of such things.

Daohua sat down opposite him, rubbed her hands together, and then told Wang Man’er, “Go bring two pots of charcoal and have someone bring the tea set.”

Xiao Yeyang smiled. “Oh? You can appreciate tea now?”

Daohua chuckled. “It’s just tea. Who can’t drink it?”

Xiao Yeyang shook his head, speechless.

Seeing this, Daohua immediately became unhappy. “What’s that look? Are you looking down on me? Let me tell you, I’m just lazy. It’s just tasting tea. I’ll show you later.”

Chapter 223: Change

 Chapter 223: Change

Shuangxin Courtyard.

Looking at Concubine Lin, who was lying on the bed with a haggard face, Yan Zhigao rubbed his forehead in frustration.

"Master..."

Concubine Lin gazed at Yan Zhigao with tear-filled eyes, her expression full of indescribable sorrow and grievance.

Yan Zhigao sighed, "I had someone restrict your attendants’ movements to ensure you could rest properly. But look at the trouble you've caused."

Tears welled up in Concubine Lin's eyes, and she began to cry, "I thought... I thought you were tired of me, Master. I was so afraid."

Yan Zhigao sat on the edge of the bed and patted Concubine Lin's hand, "You overthought it. It's alright, stop crying. Didn't the physician say you need to rest?" He reached out and wiped the tears from her face.

Afterward, Yan Zhigao personally fed Concubine Lin a bowl of chicken soup, spoke with her for a while, and then prepared to leave.

As soon as he stood up, Concubine Lin grabbed his hand.

"The front courtyard has some matters I need to attend to. I’ll come back to see you tonight," Yan Zhigao reassured her.

Concubine Lin did not let go, her face showing a hesitant and reluctant expression, yet she seemed to have no choice but to speak, "Master, my body is ruined. Even sitting for a while exhausts me. I’m afraid I don’t have the strength to take care of Fifth Miss anymore."

Yan Zhigao immediately furrowed his brow. If it weren't for her condition, he would have left right away. "Did I not tell you? The old madam is elderly and doesn’t have the energy to care for a newborn."

Concubine Lin, seeing Yan Zhigao's displeasure, quickly replied, "I didn’t mean to trouble the old madam. It was my mistake before, I just thought she might feel lonely and bored, not thinking it through."

Yan Zhigao knitted his brows. "Then why are you holding onto me?"

Concubine Lin’s eyes filled with tears again. "If my body wasn’t so weak, I would take care of Fifth Miss myself."

In the past, Yan Zhigao might have believed her, but after her attempt to bring her newborn daughter to the old madam’s courtyard, he became suspicious.

Seeing that Yan Zhigao didn’t respond, Concubine Lin continued, mustering the courage to speak, "As the legitimate mother, it’s the wife’s responsibility to raise the children. The wife is kind-hearted, which is why Wenbin and Yishuang stayed by my side. But now my body is failing, and I must entrust Fifth Miss to the wife."

Yan Zhigao frowned but didn’t immediately speak.

"Master..." Seeing that he remained silent, Concubine Lin tugged at his sleeve.

Yan Zhigao gently removed her hand, saying only, "I understand," before leaving.

Once he left, Yan Wenbin and Yan Yishuang entered, looking confused as they stared at Concubine Lin.

"Mother, why are you sending Fifth Sister away?"

Concubine Lin glanced at her third daughter in the swaddling cloth with some impatience, signaling for Xiyun to take the child out before speaking, "Raising children is the duty of the legitimate mother."

Yan Yishuang said, "But Fifth Sister is your daughter. If you send her to the wife, won’t she become distant from us? Mother, please don’t send her away."

Concubine Lin impatiently waved away her daughter's hand, "Enough. Children shouldn’t worry about adult matters. I have my reasons for sending Fifth Miss to the wife. Now, I need to rest, so you two should leave."

Yan Yishuang wanted to say more, but Yan Wenbin pulled her away.

After her children left, Concubine Lin lay back, staring blankly at the ceiling.

What she had always wanted was a son, but she had given birth to a daughter. Keeping another daughter by her side didn’t benefit her much. It was better to send her to the main courtyard to serve the wife.

The wife always prided herself on being virtuous, so now everyone could see how she would treat the daughter she had given birth to.

If the wife treated the child well, she would earn praise from others, but Concubine Lin imagined the wife would feel like she had swallowed a fly. If the wife treated the daughter poorly, then the image of virtue she had carefully built over the years would be shattered.

That evening, Yan Zhigao returned to the main courtyard, distracted and preoccupied.

Madam Li, seeing his troubled expression, immediately asked, "Master, what’s wrong? Did something happen at the Prefectural office?"

Seeing the concerned look in his wife’s eyes, Yan Zhigao felt even more uncomfortable.

Though the children of the household were to be raised by the wife, there had been some tension between the wife and Concubine Lin over the years. If the wife were to raise Concubine Lin's child, she likely wouldn't be happy about it.

Seeing his troubled expression, Madam Li’s eyes flickered. Thinking about how Yan Zhigao had gone to Concubine Lin’s side again today, she smiled and asked, “Has something happened with Concubine Lin again?”

Yan Zhigao hesitated before answering, “She’s hurt her body and doesn’t have the strength to take care of Fifth Miss.”

Upon hearing this, Madam Li immediately smiled and interrupted, “I thought it was something serious, seeing you so troubled. After the physician explained Concubine Lin’s condition, I had someone hire two women specifically to look after the child and brought them to the house.”

“Tomorrow, we’ll send them to Concubine Lin’s. With them taking care of Fifth Miss, she’ll just need to play with the child when she wakes up each day. She doesn’t need to worry about anything else.”

Yan Zhigao stared at Madam Li, who was happily deciding things, and for a moment, didn’t know what to say.

Madam Li noticed his silence and asked with a smile, “What’s wrong? Do you have any objections to my arrangement?”

Yan Zhigao quickly shook his head, “No, your arrangements are perfect.”

Madam Li smiled, “I am the master’s wife; these things are my duty.”

Yan Zhigao could only silently respond.

The next day, when Concubine Lin saw the two women brought in to take care of the child, she was so angry that she immediately smashed several things. Ping Xiao, who had come to deliver them, sneered upon seeing this.

“Concubine Lin sure is bold. It seems the things in the Yan family don’t require you to spend money on them. The Madam said that the Yan family values thrift, and since you intentionally broke things in your room, you should pay for them. If you can’t, then leave the room empty.”

Seeing Concubine Lin’s eyes burning with fury, Ping Xiao wasn’t afraid.

“It looks like Concubine Lin is quite upset. You could always go to the master and make trouble; let’s see if the master will let you continue causing chaos!”

With that, she snorted coldly and turned to leave.

Concubine Lin had caused trouble by failing to send her newborn daughter to the old madam’s courtyard. Now, she was targeting Madam Li. This was something that Duhua only learned after the situation was resolved.

“The changes in the environment really have a big impact on people,” Duhua said with some emotion.

In the past, her mother was kind, but to be honest, a bit too gentle.

After coming to Xingzhou, and interacting more with the other women in the back courtyard, her methods had gradually become sharper and more decisive.

Look at how neatly and decisively things were handled. Even though her stepfather was biased toward Shuangxin Courtyard, he couldn’t even say no.

Wang Man’er didn’t quite understand what her young lady meant, but as long as she knew Concubine Lin hadn’t gotten what she wanted, she was happy. “Miss, tomorrow the master and fourth master will be back. Is your purse finished?”

Gu Yu brought over the embroidery frame. “The embroidered surface is done; it’s just the final touches left.”

Wang Man’er looked at the embroidery frame and asked with confusion, “Miss, why are you embroidering a panda on one side and a tiger on the other?”

Duhua smiled. “Of course, it’s because Fourth Brother has both a cute and silly side, as well as a brave and fierce side.”

Chapter 222: Retribution

 Chapter 222: Retribution

Yan Zhigao fled in haste from Songhe Courtyard, and his actions quickly spread throughout the Yan family estates.

Second Courtyard.

Sun Shi sneered, "This Lin Shi still thinks it's like a few years ago when she was favored and could get whatever she wanted. Now, she has a concubine's daughter and thinks she can bring her to the old madam's side to be raised. How dare she even think of such a thing?"

Yan Yile, who had been sulking and drawing large characters in frustration, immediately raised her head and asked, "Mother, if Concubine Lin brings Fifth Sister to Grandmother's side, will Elder Sister lose favor? Isn't that a good thing?"

"Good thing? What good thing!" Sun Shi poked her youngest daughter's forehead, "If Fifth Daughter is really taken to the old madam’s courtyard to be raised, her status will be elevated. Who knows, she might even end up overshadowing you all. Do you want a concubine’s daughter, born from a lesser wife, to step all over your heads?"

Yan Yile immediately shook her head.

Sun Shi continued, "Even if Fifth Daughter is taken into the old madam’s courtyard, your elder sister won’t lose favor. Haven’t you all noticed? Your elder sister is the old madam’s darling. Do you think anyone can replace her?"

"If the old madam were so easily swayed, you'd be charming, Yishuang would be sweet, but has the old madam ever been particularly kind to you?"

Yan Yile pouted. It was true that her grandmother was difficult to please.

Sun Shi tapped her head, "Enough, get to work. Write a hundred essays, and then you can show your elder sister."

Yan Yile pouted, "Elder Sister really can make us do everything her way."

Sun Shi snapped, "If you were as capable as your elder sister, others would listen to you too. Now, write well. Daohua always keeps her promises. If you don't start listening now, wait until she doesn’t bring you along when going out. Then you'll see what happens."

Hearing this, Yan Yile reluctantly bent her head down to continue her work.

Third Courtyard.

Wu Shi was smiling as she played with a rattle in front of her youngest son, who was crawling around on the bed.

Maid Chunju stood at the other side of the bed, keeping an eye on the child to prevent him from falling. Looking at Yan Wencheng’s chubby cheeks, she smiled and said, "Seventh Master is crawling more skillfully now, and his strength is growing."

Wu Shi reached out and pinched her son's round face, laughing, "You should see how his big sister feeds him. He’s almost becoming a little piglet."

Chunju glanced at Wu Shi in confusion, "Third Madam, why aren’t you worried about Fifth Miss being sent to the old madam’s side? Isn't that a concern?"

Wu Shi smiled faintly, "Why should I be worried? Mother-in-law doesn’t even want to keep Wencheng, her proper grandson, close to her. Do you think she’d want to raise a concubine’s daughter? This is just going to add to the First Madam’s troubles."

She paused for a moment.

"Big Brother is really something else, going all the way to the old madam’s side for this. The First Madam must be upset."

Of the two sisters-in-law, she favored the First Madam the most. The First Madam was upright and willing to teach her things she didn’t understand, unlike the Second Madam, who often belittled her, whether intentionally or not.

Chunju remarked, "Now that Concubine Lin’s plan has fallen through, the First Madam should be happy."

Wu Shi shook her head and remained silent.

While the First Madam was the most respectable of the three daughters-in-law, she also had the most to bear. Just the two concubines of Big Brother were enough to add to her stress.

Although her husband only managed the household’s farmland, she was content. If he were as capable as Big Brother, managing several concubines, she would lose sleep over it.

She really couldn’t understand why the Second Madam envied the First Madam so much.

Shuangxin Courtyard.

Concubine Lin was filled with resentment upon learning that the old madam had refused to take in her daughter. Struggling to sit up, she looked at her maid, Xiyun, and asked, "Where is the master? Why hasn't he come?"

Xiyun hesitated, not daring to look at the angry Concubine Lin.

Concubine Lin angrily threw the pillow on the bed, "I’m asking you a question! Are you deaf?"

Xiyun quickly replied, "The master left the old madam's courtyard and went straight to the main hall."

Concubine Lin was stunned for a moment, then sneered, "Is the master avoiding me?"

Xiyun, seeing Concubine Lin’s pale face, said anxiously, "My lady, you've just given birth. You should lie down and rest, don't strain your body."

Concubine Lin muttered angrily, "If my body gets hurt, then so be it. No one cares."

Xiyun quickly added, "My lady, even if you don’t think of yourself, you should think about Fifth Master and the Third Miss and Fifth Miss."

Only then did Concubine Lin lie back down. Just then, the child in the swaddling cloth began crying.

Concubine Lin glanced irritably at the child and snapped, "Why isn’t the wet nurse here yet? Take the child away."

Xiyun dared not say more and hurriedly took the child away.

In the west wing, the sounds from Concubine Lin's room were clearly heard by Concubine Liu.

Concubine Liu, while copying Buddhist scriptures, couldn't help but smile coldly.

Her maid, Xu'er, also heard the sounds and said with a hint of gloating, "Now Concubine Lin is getting what she deserves. Serves her right for trying to frame you."

Concubine Liu smiled faintly. "It was my carelessness." She put down her pen, rubbed her wrist, and said, "Let’s wait and see. I’ll settle the score with her eventually."

After saying that, she looked in the direction of the main house.

"Let her keep making a scene. Once the master’s affection is worn down, Concubine Lin is finished."

Over the next few days, Concubine Lin kept sending people to block Yan Zhigao.

Yan Zhigao knew why Concubine Lin wanted to see him but didn’t want to meet her. He also began to get irritated by her constant attempts to create trouble.

His mother was already displeased, and though his wife didn't show it, he knew that she too must be uncomfortable, but she had kept quiet out of consideration for his reputation.

He had once thought Concubine Lin was reasonable, but now she was becoming increasingly unreasonable.

Yan Zhigao grew dissatisfied, and his desire to avoid meeting Concubine Lin only increased.

When he refused to meet her, Concubine Lin didn’t back off; instead, she sent people even more frequently, and once, she even had someone block the front courtyard.

This time, Yan Zhigao was completely enraged and had Concubine Lin's people placed under house arrest, with their meals sent to them by the kitchen.

After that, there was constant noise coming from Concubine Lin's room, including sounds of smashing and the baby crying.

Having just given birth, the constant turmoil took a toll, and soon, Concubine Lin began to experience heavy bleeding.

"You said what? Concubine Lin won’t be able to have children anymore?" Daohua was shocked as she looked at Wang Man'er.

Wang Man'er nodded. "The physician said so. She had a difficult delivery this time, and now, with all the turmoil in her confinement period, it has left her with a lasting problem."

Daohua sighed, "Could she have postpartum depression?"

"What’s that?" Wang Man'er asked, confused.

Daohua waved her hand, "It's a kind of illness."

Wang Man'er nodded but didn't ask further, knowing that her young lady had been studying medical books. "But I think this is Concubine Lin’s retribution."

"Mm?" Daohua looked up at her.

Wang Man'er lowered her voice. "Why was Concubine Lin’s delivery so difficult? Didn’t she cause it herself by scheming against Concubine Liu and falling, leading to a premature birth? Now she can’t have any more children—this is her own doing."

Daohua nodded. "Makes sense!"

Gu Yu added, "Exactly, if Concubine Lin had just rested properly, everything would have been fine. But she kept making trouble, and now she’s brought it all upon herself."

Chapter 221: Shame

 Chapter 221: Shame

In the Songhe Courtyard,

Old Madam Yan sat calmly, showing no signs of joy or anger, as she carefully trimmed the green chrysanthemums and red plums on the table with a small pair of scissors. After finishing one pot, she had Grandma Sun move it away.

Below her, Yan Zhigao fidgeted uneasily, occasionally looking up at his mother, feeling a growing unease in his heart.

Although he was already past thirty and had become a fifth-rank Prefect Magistrate, facing his silent, serious mother still made him feel immense pressure.

His mother had lost her husband early and had raised them alone. Her temper had been rather harsh in the past, and when she was upset, he knew he couldn’t handle her wrath.

It wasn’t until Old Madam Yan finished trimming all the pots that she finally put down her scissors and looked slowly at her eldest son, asking in a calm voice, "Sending the child to my courtyard, was that your idea or Lin Shi's?"

Yan Zhigao, relieved that his mother had spoken, hurriedly responded, "It was Lin’s suggestion, but after thinking about it, I realized that the children in the family are always busy with their lessons and rarely have time to talk to you. I thought you might be feeling lonely, so..."

Old Madam Yan interrupted him, "So you want to send a child to my courtyard just to pass the time for me?"

Yan Zhigao awkwardly nodded.

Old Madam Yan snorted, "They say children are like flesh and blood from their mother. Your concubine is quite generous. The child hasn’t even been born for a few days, and she’s already eager to send it to me."

Yan Zhigao, catching the sarcasm in his mother’s words, couldn’t help but defend his concubine, "She’s just trying to show filial piety, thinking that you’re lonely..."

Old Madam Yan, clearly impatient, waved her hand to cut him off, "Filial piety? I already have three proper daughters-in-law. Do I need a little concubine to show me filial piety? It’s just the two of us here. If your wife and your other two sisters-in-law hear this, they’d scold you for sure."

"If she’s showing filial piety by sending the child, then what about the third wife? When she gave birth to Wen Cheng last year, didn’t she send him here? Wouldn’t that mean she’s unfilial?"

Yan Zhigao froze. He hadn’t considered that.

Old Madam Yan shot him a sideways glance, "And tell me, where did you see that I’m lonely?"

Yan Zhigao glanced around at all the potted plants in his mother’s room, each one well-maintained, brimming with vitality.

Clearly, his mother had spent a lot of time tending to them.

At this moment, a sudden voice interrupted the tension.

"Not lonely, not lonely, the Old Madam isn’t lonely!"

Yan Zhigao stiffened and turned his head toward the parrot perched on the window sill.

Old Madam Yan stood up, smiling, and walked over to the parrot with a plate of peeled sunflower seeds, placing a generous amount into the parrot's dish.

When the parrot immediately bent down to peck at the seeds, she laughed, "Clearly, like owner, like pet. Daohua’s a foodie, and you’re a little foodie too."

Daohua had worried about Old Madam Yan feeling lonely, so she had brought the parrot over early in the morning to keep her company and cheer her up.

"Old Madam Yan’s a foodie too! Foodies are the best, great for health, everything tastes good!"

Seeing how quickly her mother was cheered up by the parrot, Yan Zhigao’s face grew more embarrassed.

Old Madam Yan teased the parrot for a while, then sat back down, took a sip of tea, and spoke in a soft tone, "I can guess what your concubine is thinking. Let me ask you, do you really believe she’s just showing filial piety?"

Yan Zhigao opened his mouth, wanting to speak, but the words stuck in his throat.

He did know what Lin’s intentions were, but seeing her lying weakly in bed, with pleading eyes, he couldn’t bring himself to refuse her.

Old Madam Yan sneered, "How you treat your concubine is your business, but Zhigao, the political world is dangerous, and the inner courtyard isn’t any less turbulent. Don’t let your own selfish desires disturb the peace of the family."

"If Lin Shi were a well-behaved woman, it’d be fine, but she’s a schemer. She doesn’t just want your favor; she’s also eyeing Li’s position. Don’t tell me you haven’t noticed that?"

Yan Zhigao furrowed his brows, remaining silent for a long while before finally standing and bowing to his mother, "Mother, I was wrong."

Old Madam Yan fixed him with a steady gaze, "I hope you truly understand. Everything in the Yan family isn’t just thanks to you alone. Don’t alienate people’s hearts."

"Also, you must know that the children are growing up, and they’ll begin to think more and more. If you go too far, it’ll only drive a wedge between the siblings."

"After all, they are not even siblings born of the same mother. Don't expect the children to be truly close and loving with each other."

"People need to know their place. Don't let Wenbin and Yishuang develop inappropriate thoughts."

"One of the greatest mistakes a person can make is to covet what doesn't belong to them. Once that thought is in their heart, it only leads to harm for both themselves and others."

Yan Zhigao's expression became serious. He had indeed been careless about matters in the inner courtyard.

Grandmother Yan continued, "By the way, I heard that Lin Shi's premature birth was because she pushed Liu Shi first. Liu Shi hadn't done anything, and Lin Shi just fell to the ground on her own."

Yan Zhigao immediately wanted to defend Lin Shi, but Grandmother Yan didn’t want to hear his explanation. She spoke to herself instead.

"As for the matters in the inner courtyard, leave them to Li Shi to handle. You're a grown man, but your understanding of women’s schemes is still too limited. You're easily fooled by their delicate appearances and don’t realize that some women will do anything when they’re pushed too far."

"Li Shi is gentle, virtuous, and considerate. Even though her thoughts are often focused on her own children, she’s not a heartless person. I trust her to manage the inner courtyard for you, and you should also place some trust in her."

Yan Zhigao was silent for a moment and then bowed. "I will follow my mother's command."

After speaking for a long time, Grandmother Yan seemed a little tired and waved her hand. "Go on."

"Then, Mother, please rest well."

Yan Zhigao turned to leave. Just as he stepped out the door, he heard the voice of Grandmother Yan.

"In my life, I’ve exhausted my energy raising them, bringing up the four siblings. I could say I’ve lived for them all this time. Now, they’ve all married and made their own careers, and I can say I’ve fulfilled my duty to their late father and the ancestors of the Yan family."

"As for me, being able to live this long and strong is all thanks to that girl, Daohua. These extra years, I want to live more freely. Things at home are getting better, but with that comes more worries."

Then, came the voice of Sun Ma.

"Old Madam, but isn't the eldest madam in charge of the household? You should just enjoy yourself."

Grandmother Yan replied, "Li Shi is a good woman, and she’s filial. She never brings up the household troubles in front of me. She arranges everything for me, from food to clothing, perfectly. But it’s my own son who troubles me. I must have owed them in my past life."

"I raised all four of them, but that’s not enough. Now they’re sending their own children to me. Am I their wet nurse? Don’t they know how much effort it takes to raise a child? They think every child is as endearing as Daohua. They must think I’m living too comfortably and are deliberately making trouble for me."

Upon hearing this, Yan Zhigao felt as if he had been struck by lightning. Embarrassed, he fled as if trying to escape.

He was truly unfilial. He had been prompted by Lin Shi to go to his mother, without considering whether his so-called filial piety was actually not something she needed.

Chapter 220: Taking Things for Granted

Chapter 220: Taking Things for Granted

"This time, after entering the manor, I noticed something about Madam Li. Her entire demeanor has changed," Wang Shi said, furrowing her brow as she recalled meeting Madam Li in the main courtyard of the Yan residence.

In the past, though she was the main wife, Madam Li lacked confidence when facing Concubine Lin, since her husband’s heart was clearly with his daughter. But this time, not only did she exude an air of nobility, but there was also an added confidence and authority in her eyes, making Wang Shi feel slightly intimidated, almost unable to meet her gaze.

Lin Xushi joined in, adding, "The rules at the Yan residence have become stricter."

Before, there was no need for women like them to inform anyone if they were visiting. Even their husbands could come and go without the need for a formal notice. But now, whenever they want to enter, they must first send a written notice, which has to be approved by Madam Li before they’re allowed to enter.

The process was becoming more troublesome, and they had to endure quite a bit of indignation in the middle.

Concubine Lin sighed deeply. "As Master’s official rank grows, it’s only natural that he pays more attention to propriety. And as for Madam…" Concubine Lin smiled bitterly. "Since Master became the Prefect Magistrate, Madam has been meeting with the wives of influential officials. No matter how much she’s tainted by the smell of copper, she’s bound to be refined by association."

"And as for me," Concubine Lin continued, her voice tinged with bitterness, "no matter how talented I am, I’m locked away in this courtyard, not allowed to step out even a single step!"

At her words, both Wang Shi and Lin Xushi fell silent. There was nothing they could do to help.

Concubine Lin went on, "Furthermore, the eldest Young Master and Fourth Young Master are becoming more successful, and the eldest daughter is also quite formidable. Madam’s confidence is naturally growing."

Wang Shi spoke up this time. "Wenbin and Yishuang are also good children. Your brother says Wenbin’s talent for reading is not inferior to that of the eldest son of the Yan family."

Concubine Lin smiled bitterly again. "So what? Even if Wenbin is exceptionally talented, the people he meets and the world he’s exposed to are nothing compared to the eldest Young Master of the Yan family, who has studied at Wangyue Academy."

"One’s future is determined by more than just being good at studying."

"Take Master, for example. When he was a county magistrate, the people loved him. But because he had no support in the official world, he was stuck in that position for nine years."

Wang Shi’s face darkened with displeasure. "Why is it that the Yan family’s eldest daughter has such a cruel heart? Wenbin is her brother, yet she would rather help the cousin from the third branch than her own brother."

Concubine Lin sneered coldly. "The eldest daughter’s heart is ruthless. I know, she’s doing it on purpose. She’s taking revenge for the time when my brother tricked her into getting slapped by Master."

Wang Shi snorted, "A girl should be gentle and demure. With such a vicious nature, the eldest daughter of the Yan family will surely face difficulties later on."

Lin Xushi, noticing that her mother-in-law was still not addressing the main point of their visit, discreetly tugged at her sleeve, signaling her to speak directly.

Wang Shi hesitated for a moment, noticing her daughter-in-law’s subtle signals. Her expression shifted, torn between indecision and discomfort.

At that moment, Concubine Lin had been quietly observing the exchange and raised an eyebrow. "Mother, Sister-in-law, what are you two doing?"

Lin Xushi stiffened. "Uh… Mother has something to say to you."

Concubine Lin looked at Wang Shi. "Mother, if you have something to say, just say it."

Wang Shi glared at her daughter-in-law for a moment, then, after a brief pause, turned her attention to her newborn granddaughter, who had only just been born a few days ago. "What are you going to do about this child?"

Concubine Lin was taken aback. For a moment, she didn’t quite understand her mother’s meaning.

What do you mean, "What are you going to do"? The child is mine. Of course, I’ll raise her. What else is there to discuss?

Wang Shi, unwilling to meet her daughter’s gaze, steeled herself and said, "Your brother has discussed it with us. Given the current situation in the Yan family, it’s probably best if you send the child to Old Madam Yan’s courtyard to be raised."

Concubine Lin was stunned, and at first, she couldn’t believe what she had just heard. She immediately wanted to refute it, but then, as her mind shifted to the fact that Master had been growing fonder of  Madam, her position was becoming increasingly precarious. She swallowed the words she was about to say.

Seeing that Concubine Lin didn’t immediately protest, Wang Shi and Lin Xushi both breathed a sigh of relief.

Wang Shi spoke more gently, "Your brother means well. Think about it—if you send the child to Old Madam Yan’s courtyard, not only will Old Madam Yan be kinder to you, but she will also speak up for you if Madam Li gets too arrogant."

"Also, if you show filial piety by sending the child to Old Madam Yan’s, perhaps your husband will feel grateful and guilty, which will help you maintain your position in the rear courtyard."

"Lastly, if the child is raised in Old Madam Yan's courtyard, it will be beneficial for your reputation as well. For the child, it is the best arrangement. The Old Lady is the most esteemed person in the Yan residence, and everything she has—food, clothes, and other needs—will be of the highest quality. The child will enjoy a life of luxury with her," Wang Shi added.

Concubine Lin remained silent, not responding.

Wang Shi sighed, then stood up and patted Concubine Lin’s hand. "Think it over carefully. We will come to visit you next time."

After the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law left, Concubine Lin lay on the bed, her gaze unfocused. After a long while, she finally turned to look at her newborn daughter, who was wrapped in swaddling clothes, and then called for Xiyun.

"Do you have any orders?" Xiyun asked, approaching.

Concubine Lin stared at her daughter in the swaddling clothes and then closed her eyes. "Go to the Hanging Flower Gate and wait for the master. Tell him to come tonight, that I have something to discuss with him."

"You said what?"

Daohua looked at Wang Man’er in surprise. "Concubine Lin wants to send her newly born daughter to grandmother's courtyard?"

Wang Man’er saw the playful look on her young lady's face and noticed that she didn’t seem worried at all. With a stomp of her foot, she said, "Oh my young lady, stop just watching the fun! If Fifth Miss really is sent to Old Madam Yan's courtyard, what will you do?"

"Pfft~"

Daohua couldn’t hold back and laughed out loud, feeling a bit exasperated. "What would I do? Do you really think a little baby could replace me in my grandmother’s heart?"

Wang Man’er paused, and she too felt that it was unlikely. "But, it will definitely divide Old Madam Yan’s attention, won’t it?"

Daohua calmly resumed embroidering a panda on her hoop, with a slight smirk. "I thought Concubine Lin would show a bit more self-awareness after coming to Xingzhou, but it seems she hasn’t changed at all."

She sneered.

"She thinks that by sending the child to grandmother’s courtyard, grandmother will just have to accept it? Her face is as thick as ever!"

Wang Man’er, watching her young lady steadily thread the needle, felt her own anxiousness slowly fade away.

Indeed, she had been too quick to panic. Whether Old Madam Yan would even accept Fifth Miss was still uncertain.

Meanwhile, in the main courtyard.

Madam Li received the news, a disdainful smile briefly flashing across her face before she continued to sort through the annual gifts from various families.

"Madam, the master has already gone to the Songhe Courtyard. Aren't you going to check on him?" Ping Xiao asked, her tone anxious.

Madam Li smiled faintly. "Mother is the most sensible. Concubine Lin is simply being presumptuous. There’s no need to worry about it."

Chapter 219: No Pain, No Gain

Chapter 219: No Pain, No Gain

"Miss, it's here!"

Seeing Wang Man'er rushing into the room with an excited expression, Daohua was instantly annoyed.

What does "it's here" mean?

Can’t she speak properly?

Wang Man'er didn’t realize her slip of the tongue. As soon as she got in front of Daohua, she excitedly exclaimed, "Miss, Concubine Lin has given birth to a daughter. You have another little sister!"

Daohua silently stared at Wang Man'er, whose face was full of smiles.

Wang Man'er noticed Daohua's unwavering gaze and the smile on her face froze. "Miss, what’s wrong?"

Daohua was speechless. "Shouldn't I be the one asking what's wrong? Concubine Lin gave birth to a daughter, and you're so happy?"

Wang Man'er quickly shook her head. "I'm not happy, no, I'm happy because Concubine Lin had a daughter, not a son. Now, let's see how proud she can be."

"Before the birth, she kept shouting about craving sour food, almost as if she was trying to tell everyone that she was carrying a boy. Now, she must be embarrassed, right?"

Daohua shot a disapproving glance at Wang Man'er, who was grinning with schadenfreude. "Whether it's a boy or a girl, they're still the father's child."

Wang Man'er replied, "It’s different. If it had been a son, Concubine Lin would have been so proud."

Daohua didn't say much in response.

In ancient times, there was a deeply rooted preference for sons over daughters. Though Daohua didn't share this view, it was indeed better for Concubine Lin to give birth to a daughter rather than a son.

Wang Man'er continued, "Oh, Miss, Master has punished Concubine Liu."

"Oh?" Daohua raised an eyebrow. "What did she do?"

Wang Man'er replied, "Master said Concubine Liu caused Concubine Lin’s premature labor, so he punished her with house arrest for three months and ordered her to copy scriptures to pray for the newborn Fifth Miss."

Daohua narrowed her eyes. "Did Concubine Liu really push Concubine Lin?"

Wang Man'er scoffed, "Who knows? Anyway, Concubine Lin's maid insists that Concubine Liu pushed her, but Concubine Liu was alone at the time."

"However, Concubine Liu’s response was strange. She didn't defend herself at all, just said that she nearly harmed the Yan family's bloodline, and that she was guilty and deserved to be punished."

Daohua's eyes flashed. "She knows how to use retreat as a form of advance!"

Concubine Lin had just given birth, and her father clearly favored her. The more Concubine Liu defended herself, the more likely she would provoke his disgust. It was better for her to admit her fault; at least her attitude would seem sincere.

Moreover, her statement about "causing trouble" was very telling. Was she implying that Concubine Lin had attacked her first?

"Enough about them. Quickly bring me the embroidery frame; I need to finish the pouch for Fourth Brother before his birthday, or he’ll start causing trouble again."

December 18th was Fourth Brother Yan Wenkai’s birthday, and there were only a few days left.

Wang Man'er curiously looked at the embroidery design. "Miss, what animal is this? I’ve never seen it before. Is it a bear?"

Daohua smiled as she picked up the embroidery frame, looked at it, and nodded in satisfaction. "Isn’t it cute? This is an animal from the Bashu region. It's a type of bear, I suppose."

A panda is still a type of bear.

At Shuangxin Courtyard

Concubine Lin lay in bed, looking somewhat disappointed as she gazed at her newborn daughter in the swaddling cloth.

Ever since she found out she was pregnant, she had been certain she was carrying a son.

The more she had hoped for it, the more disappointed she was now.

She had thought that giving birth to another son would win her husband’s favor back, but now, all her hopes had shattered.

At this moment, her senior maid, Xiyun, entered. "Madam, your mother and sister-in-law are here to see you."

Upon hearing this, Concubine Lin's face immediately brightened. "Quickly, bring them in."

Soon, a middle-aged woman and a younger woman were ushered in.

Seeing them, Concubine Lin tried to sit up, but the middle-aged woman quickly stepped forward and pressed her back down. "Don’t move! You’ve just given birth; you need to rest."

Concubine Lin didn’t insist. She held onto Wang Shi’s hand and reclined back. "Mother," she said, before turning to look at the younger woman beside her. "Sister-in-law."

Lin Shiye's wife, Lin Xushi, smiled and stepped forward to look at the newborn girl. "What a beautiful child. She looks just like you."

Concubine Lin smiled. "I actually wish she looked more like Master. That way, she might win his favor."

Hearing this, Lin's mother Wang Shi’s eyes immediately reddened, and her voice became choked. "It’s all your father’s fault. If he had some backbone, how could you end up as someone else’s concubine? Now, you have to fight for the master's affection for your child."

Concubine Lin immediately fell silent. After a while, she bitterly smiled and said, "Mother, this is my fate."

Seeing the guilt and self-blame on Wang Shi’s face, and the awkwardness on her sister-in-law’s, Concubine Lin had no choice but to feign ease and said, "Mother, you know how Master treats me. I live well in the Yan family."

Wang Shi looked dissatisfied. "Living well? If you really lived well, how could you have had a premature birth?"

At these words, Concubine Lin’s eyes flickered, and she glanced at the maid, Xiyun. "Go stand by the door. I need to talk privately with Mother and Sister-in-law."

"Yes."

Xiyun quickly retreated.

After everyone left, Concubine Lin quietly said, "This wasn’t really a premature birth, it was deliberate, to deal with that woman in the courtyard."

Both Wang Shi and Lin Xushi were stunned.

After a brief silence, Wang Shi angrily scolded, "You, why don't you take better care of your body? What if something really happens? What will Wenbin and Yishuang do then?"

Concubine Lin hurriedly reassured her, "Mother, don’t worry, I know what I’m doing."

Wang Shi was still worried. "Giving birth is always like walking through the gates of death. You must never joke with your own body again."

Concubine Lin’s face darkened. "In the future... I’m afraid there won’t be a chance."

Wang Shi immediately became displeased. "Don’t talk like that! You’re still young."

Lin Xushi also added, "Yes, with Master Yan’s love for you, you’ll surely have many children and much happiness in the future."

Concubine Lin shook her head bitterly. "I used to think that way too, but now…"

Wang Shi looked alarmed. "What’s wrong? Has that vixen in your courtyard bewitched your husband?"

Concubine Lin shook her head again. "No, it’s not like that. Master isn’t one to be swayed by beauty. He’s indifferent to Liu Shi."

Wang Shi relaxed. "Then why worry?"

Concubine Lin fell silent for a moment. "Honestly, I’m not so worried about Liu Shi now. What worries me is the madam."

Wang Shi and Lin Xushi were both taken aback.

Concubine Lin continued, "Like this time, I risked my health to have a premature birth, just to get rid of Liu Shi. Even if I couldn’t remove her, I at least wanted her out of my courtyard."

"Everything was almost settled, but with one word from the madam, Master changed his mind. He only imposed house arrest on Liu Shi and had her copy Buddhist scriptures as punishment."

"This punishment, compared to the pain I went through during childbirth, is like nothing."

"Now, Master is paying more and more attention to the madam. When he has any troubles, he used to tell me about them, but now, he confides in her."

"What I’ve relied on all along is Master’s favor. If that favor is gone, then I’ll truly be just another ordinary concubine in the Yan family’s rear courtyard."

Chapter 218: A Conflict Arises

 Chapter 218: A Conflict Arises

"Mother, this is the list of gifts I’ve prepared for Aunt for the New Year. Please have a look."

Daohua handed the gift list to Madam Li.

Madam Li took the list and reviewed it. It included food, clothing, and household items. "Has the Old Madam seen this?"

Daohua nodded. "Yes, Grandmother and I decided on these items together. I wanted to see if you’d like to add or change anything."

Madam Li set the list down with a smile. "The items are comprehensive, but we could add some goods from the estate. Your aunt is not in great health—black rice and red dates are particularly nourishing, so we should include more of those."

Daohua readily agreed and grinned. "Mother, you seem to have a close relationship with Aunt. Every year, the gifts you prepare for her are especially generous."

Madam Li smiled faintly. "When I first married into the Yan family, your aunt helped me a great deal. Without her, it wouldn’t have been so easy for me to settle in. I owe her much." She paused momentarily.

She also understood the difficulties of "marrying up."

As a merchant’s daughter marrying into a scholarly family, and with her sister-in-law coming from a humble background to marry into a prominent household, they both experienced similar challenges. This shared struggle naturally fostered mutual empathy.

Daohua chuckled. "Mother, because of how well you treat Aunt, Grandmother often praises you in front of me."

Relationships thrive on reciprocity. Kindness shown to one person often begets goodwill in return.

What Daohua appreciated most about her family was the lack of conflict between her grandmother and mother.

Her grandmother was reasonable and never meddled in household affairs, while her mother was filial and considerate, always acting with prudence. Their harmony made the household peaceful.

Madam Li smiled. "Since I married into this family, the Old Madam has treated me well. Having a sensible mother-in-law who doesn’t meddle is a blessing."

Because of this, Madam Li was willing to bear more of the household responsibilities, even overlooking the shortcomings of the second branch to avoid putting the Old Madam in a difficult position.

Speaking of the second branch, Madam Li suddenly remembered something and turned to her daughter. "I heard you punished Yi Le?"

Daohua nodded. "Teacher Shen had us choose artistic pursuits. Because I chose one extra, Fourth Sister made snide remarks behind my back, even involving Teacher Shen in her complaints. So I punished her by having her copy one hundred characters. Did Second Aunt come to complain?"

Madam Li shook her head with a smile. "Not at all. Your Second Aunt is clever but sometimes overly calculating, which can make her unlikable."

"That said, she takes her children’s education very seriously."

"Our family used to lack discipline in many areas, but since moving to Xingzhou, seeing how others conduct themselves has prompted improvements. Your Second Aunt is smart enough to recognize what’s best for her children. After hearing the full story, she personally supervised Yi Le as she copied her punishment."

Daohua raised her eyebrows, slightly surprised.

Madam Li patted her daughter’s head and said patiently, "As the eldest sister, you have a responsibility to guide your younger siblings."

After having her daughter by her side for so long, Madam Li had come to understand her personality. Daohua didn’t care much for those she disliked. As long as they didn’t bother her, she was perfectly content to ignore them.

This attitude had its advantages—it allowed her to live comfortably. But it also had its downsides, sometimes making her seem indifferent.

"Last night, I told your father about this, and he said you handled it well."

"In this world, a single tree cannot grow into a forest. Your father has experienced the consequences of that firsthand."

"Blood relations are inescapable. If one suffers, all suffer; if one prospers, all benefit."

"Our family’s foundation is too thin. In the future, when you grow up, you’ll need to rely on and support your siblings. Their success will directly benefit you."

"So, if Yi Huan and the others make mistakes in the future, you must step in when necessary. Speak up and punish as needed. As long as you’re justified, no one will object."

Daohua frowned, clearly reluctant.

Managing people was so troublesome.

Seeing her mother’s earnest gaze, Daohua reluctantly nodded. "I’ll do my best."

Madam Li smiled, knowing her daughter was sensible and understood her responsibilities.

The mother and daughter resumed their discussion about the New Year gifts. However, their conversation was interrupted when Ping Xiao entered, pouting.

Seeing her, Daohua immediately smiled. "Sister Ping Xiao, who upset you? Tell me, and I’ll make it right for you."

Normally, Ping Xiao would laugh and chatter in response, but this time she shook her head and turned to Madam Li. "Madam, Concubine Lin may be going into labor."

Madam Li's expression turned serious. "Wasn't her due date supposed to be mid-month? Why has it come so early?"

Ping Xiao replied, "The maid from Concubine Lin’s quarters said that Concubine Liu pushed her, causing the early labor."

Hearing this, Daohua became curious and interjected, "Isn't Concubine Liu known for being very proper? Why would she push Concubine Lin?"

Was this the start of a household drama?

Ping Xiao scoffed, "Who pushed whom isn’t even clear yet. It’s probably just Concubine Lin being jealous that the master went to Concubine Liu’s room, and so—"

"Enough!"

Madam Li interrupted sharply, giving Ping Xiao a stern look. Was this kind of talk appropriate in front of her daughter? She turned to Daohua. "This has nothing to do with you. Go back to your studies."

Daohua wasn’t keen to leave, but seeing Madam Li’s serious expression, she had no choice but to take Wang Man’er and leave.

"Man’er, go find out what really happened," Daohua instructed as soon as they left the main courtyard.

She didn’t particularly care about her father’s two concubines, but it was still necessary to stay informed. After all, if they stirred up trouble, it might affect her mother.

Daohua hadn’t been back in her own courtyard for long when Wang Man’er returned.

"Miss, Concubine Lin is indeed about to give birth. Madam has already summoned the physician and midwife."

Daohua waved her off. "That’s not what I asked. I wanted to know what this has to do with Concubine Liu."

Wang Man’er explained, "Well, a while back, Concubine Lin was flaunting her pregnancy to the master. But after he left her room, he was intercepted by Concubine Liu. Since then, the two have been at odds."

Daohua nodded in understanding, then let out a faint laugh. "I thought my father wouldn’t go to Concubine Liu’s room again. Turns out... hmph."

Wang Man’er glanced at Daohua, hesitating before saying, "The master has visited Concubine Liu several times since. Who would’ve thought that someone as seemingly docile as her could be so cunning underneath?"

Daohua’s expression remained calm. "She’s my father’s concubine. Using a few tricks to maintain her position in the Yan household isn’t surprising. As long as she doesn’t overstep or covet what isn’t hers, letting her and Concubine Lin clash is fine by me."

Chapter 217: The Demeanor of an Elder Sister

Chapter 217: The Demeanor of an Elder Sister

"Master, what should we do with this cart of vegetables and fruits?" Defu asked cautiously.

Despite the seemingly improved relations between Xiao Yeyang and the secluded residence since the Dragon Boat Festival, Defu knew his master still harbored unresolved grievances. Some matters were not easily let go.

However, creating more opportunities for interaction between both sides might be beneficial.

For servants, only when their master was at ease and in a good mood could they have an easier life themselves.

Xiao Yeyang glanced at the cart of food with visible annoyance and waved dismissively. “Hurry and take it away! It’s not even meant for me. Why leave it in my courtyard? It’s an eyesore!”

Defu’s face lit up at these words. He shot a quick glance at Deshou, who was still kneeling.

Deshou, sharp as always, realized his master was agreeing to send the food to the secluded residence. He immediately stood up, grabbed the reins, and hastily departed with the cart, as if afraid Xiao Yeyang would change his mind.

Meilin Secluded Residence

Looking at the cart filled with vegetables and fruits, Guo Ruomei’s face and eyes sparkled with delight. Turning to her attendants, Meishuang and Meixue, she said, “Earlier, my elder brother wrote to me, boasting that Yang'er had become considerate, sending a cart full of produce all the way to him since the food in his area wasn’t great. He was so proud.”

“Now that I’ve received some too, quick, prepare ink and paper. I must write back to tease him.”

Meixue chuckled and promptly fetched writing materials.

Meishuang inspected the contents of the cart and noticed that most of the items were foods her mistress enjoyed. Smiling, she remarked, “Look how fresh and green these vegetables are. They must taste amazing.”

“Madam, it’s clear the young master still thinks of you. Knowing you love fruits and how hard they are to find in winter, he brought an entire cart just for you.”

As she spoke, she picked up a red apple and exclaimed, “It smells so good!” She quickly handed it to Guo Ruomei.

Holding the apple, Guo Ruomei felt a warmth in her heart despite the snowy mountains around her. “Yang'er has gifted me such a bounty. I should send him something in return. What do you think would be suitable?”

“Whatever the madam gives, the young master will surely cherish it.”

...

From then on, every time Daohua prepared vegetables and fruits for Xiao Yeyang, she would include an extra cart for the secluded residence. Though Xiao Yeyang always seemed impatient and displeased, he never refused the arrangement.

In return, the secluded residence would send back items such as hand-embroidered pouches and belts, handmade garments, or other unique trinkets.

Although Xiao Yeyang often set these gifts aside without using them, the exchange gradually built a bridge. Servants on both sides began chatting and interacting more frequently, and they would even coordinate and assist each other when necessary.

This mutual back-and-forth, unbeknownst to Daohua, had subtly improved the relationship between Xiao Yeyang and his mother.

Yan Residence, Deyi Courtyard

The classroom was warm with a blazing brazier, ensuring that Daohua and the others felt no trace of the winter chill.

While flipping through a book on refined arts at her desk, Daohua occasionally glanced at Teacher Shen seated at the head of the room.

For some reason, since November, Teacher Shen had grown stricter with her.

Previously, mastering the content of the textbooks had been enough, but now, she was expected to learn various arts as well.

“Incense burning, chess, tea appreciation, listening to rain, snow watching, moon gazing, wine tasting, gardening, exploring, and zither playing—these are the ten elegant pleasures of life,” Teacher Shen said leisurely as she sipped her tea, observing the expressions of the four young ladies before her.

“While it’s not necessary for young ladies to excel in all of them, you should at least master two or three. That way, whether hosting guests or enjoying family gatherings, you won’t find yourselves at a loss for words or dull and uninteresting.”

Teacher Shen’s gaze turned to the eldest daughter. “First Miss, have you decided what you’d like to learn?”

Hearing the teacher's question, Daohua immediately sat upright. "Teacher, I’ve made my choice—I want to learn the guqin." In her previous life, she had always wanted to study this traditional instrument, but she never had the chance.

Teacher Shen nodded with a smile. "Among the many arts, the guqin holds the highest virtue. Playing it can refine one’s temperament, express emotions, and connect with nature. A fine choice!"

Encouraged by the praise, Daohua happily placed the guqin score on top of the pile. However, Teacher Shen continued, "Besides the guqin, is there anything else you’d like to learn?"

Daohua was momentarily stunned. Wasn't learning the guqin enough?

Seeing Teacher Shen looking at her with a gentle smile, Daohua sighed inwardly and returned to flipping through the book of artistic pursuits. After some deliberation, she chose incense making.

In ancient times, incense was integral to life—it was used for scenting clothes, purifying rooms, and during rituals.

There were many applications.

Daohua was genuinely interested in incense, especially in blending fragrances herself. She even wanted to create medicinally beneficial scents—an endeavor that could be quite profitable.

"Burning incense in a quiet room cultivates refined leisure," Teacher Shen remarked with added approval. "Anything else?"

This time, Daohua resisted the pressure. No matter what, she refused to choose another skill.

Her daily schedule was already packed, and adding guqin and incense-making left her with even less free time. She simply couldn’t take on more.

Teacher Shen seemed a little regretful but didn’t insist. "Starting today, your embroidery lessons will be moved to the mornings. In the afternoons, you’ll alternate between guqin practice and incense-making."

Daohua respectfully nodded. "Yes, Teacher."

Afterward, Teacher Shen turned his attention to Yan Yihuan and her two younger sisters.

For them, she wasn’t as demanding, assigning each only one art to learn.

Yan Yihuan, who enjoyed tranquility, chose chess.

Yan Yishuang, considering herself refined, chose tea appreciation.

Yan Yile, playful by nature, selected flower arranging.

After class, Daohua waited for Teacher Shen to leave before standing to exit. Just as she reached the door, she overheard Yan Yile speaking sourly to the other two sisters.

"Teacher Shen clearly favors Eldest Sister. Not only did she teach her prized double-sided embroidery technique, but now she gets to learn an extra art compared to us."

Daohua stopped and turned, her expression serious as she looked at Yan Yile. "Fourth Sister, where are the manners you’ve been taught?"

Yan Yile was about to retort, but Yan Yihuan quickly pulled her back. "Eldest Sister, Fourth Sister spoke without thinking—she didn’t mean it."

Daohua cut her off. "Enough. I’m tired of hearing excuses like 'thoughtless,' 'careless,' or 'too young.' Whether she’s using these reasons to vent her discontent, we both know."

Straightening her expression, Daohua continued, "I didn’t want to interfere with your affairs, but your behavior reflects on the Yan family’s reputation. As such, I must say a few words."

"Teacher Shen tailors her teaching to each student’s abilities. I’m learning more because I can handle it. Ask yourselves: even if given the opportunity, could you manage such a workload?"

Unlike her sisters, she wasn’t a child mentally. Her mature mindset, patience, and strong memory allowed her to handle a heavier schedule.

"But if you truly want to learn more, you can approach Teacher Shen yourselves. Complaining behind her back, however, is unbecoming of a noble lady."

"Rules and etiquette—Teacher Shen emphasizes these daily. They’re meant to guide our actions and integrate into all aspects of life, not remain superficial. Your earlier behavior, gossiping and complaining, is hardly what Teacher Shen has been teaching us."

Turning to Yan Yile, she added, "Fourth Sister, you’ll be ten next year. Some mistakes and ignorance can no longer be excused by age. Today, for speaking ill of Teacher Shen, I’m assigning you to copy one hundred characters. Reflect on your impulsiveness."

Yan Yile panicked and protested, "I won’t do it!"

Daohua replied coolly, "That’s your choice. However, you’ll no longer be allowed to accompany us on outings. If you embarrass the family with your impulsiveness again, people might think all Yan daughters lack proper upbringing."

With that, Daohua glanced at the other two sisters and left with her maidservant.

Yan Yile anxiously looked to her elder sisters for help.

Yan Yishuang, uninterested, offered a few perfunctory words of comfort before quickly leaving.

Yan Yihuan sighed and pulled her younger sister towards the second household's courtyard. "Let’s ask Mother what to do."

Once the girls had all departed, Teacher Shen, who had observed everything from the main hall, smiled and shook her head.

A servant woman handed him a cup of tea, remarking with a chuckle, "Your guidance wasn’t in vain. The eldest young lady of the Yan family is sensible and appreciative."

Taking the tea, Teacher Shen smiled warmly. "That girl may not be the most gifted of my students, but she is the most insightful. She’s steadily growing into a true eldest sister of the household."

Chapter 216: A Small Misstep Leads to Overthinking

Chapter 216: A Small Misstep Leads to Overthinking

In the backyard of the Four Seasons Fruit and Vegetable Shop.

Grandmother Yan sat at the head seat of the main house, with Daohua standing beside her. She looked at the young servant before her, who kept his head lowered, seemingly too embarrassed to meet her eyes. “I remember you. Your name is... uh... De... De...”

The servant paused briefly before replying, “Miss, my name is Deshou.”

Daohua immediately clapped her hands. “That’s right, Deshou.”

No wonder she remembered him. Several people often surrounded Xiao Yeyang, and their presence was quite prominent. Defu, for instance, was Xiao Yeyang’s personal attendant and followed him everywhere.

As for the young man standing before her, she had also seen him multiple times. He always seemed to be present whenever food was involved, which likely meant he was responsible for meals.

Looking at Deshou, whose head was nearly buried in his chest, Daohua felt a little helpless. Was she really that intimidating? “Are you here to buy vegetables from my family?”

Deshou nodded, then quickly shook his head, recalling his master’s orders to keep the vegetable purchases a secret from Miss Yan.

Seeing his reluctance to speak, Daohua pressed further. “What’s the matter? Are the fruits and vegetables I send to your master not enough?”

Deshou first nodded, then shook his head again.

Now it wasn’t just Daohua who felt exasperated—even Grandmother Yan thought this servant was unbearably indecisive.

Daohua frowned. “Let’s see... In October, aside from the food I delivered with my eldest brother and the others, I sent another cart mid-month when your master came to gather grain seeds. There’s no way that wasn’t enough. Could he be using it to entertain guests?”

As she said this, an image of the three strange women she encountered on the main peak of Mount Wuhua suddenly came to Daohua’s mind.

Back then, Xiao Yeyang and Brother Dong’s reactions were quite odd—they didn’t seem concerned about those three women at all. Later, her fourth brother had told her that outsiders weren’t allowed near the main peak of Mount Wuhua.

If they weren’t outsiders, then they must have been acquaintances.

Daohua also thought about the secluded residence on the summit. Could those three women be living there? If so, that madam’s identity was certainly not ordinary.

Who could she be?
A concubine left behind in the countryside by the emperor?

In an instant, Daohua’s imagination ran wild. First, she envisioned a poignant love story between the emperor and a common woman. Then, she considered the tragic fate of an imperial consort abandoned in a remote residence after angering the emperor.

Either way, that madam clearly didn’t want to remain unnoticed in the residence, which might explain why she staged the fainting incident during the Chongyang Festival to set up Xiao Yeyang.

Could her goal be to return to the palace?
If that were the case, Xiao Yeyang must have been quite troubled by her.

As the emperor’s nephew, Xiao Yeyang was technically the madam’s junior. For some unknown reason, he had no choice but to send supplies to that residence, including the fruits and vegetables Daohua had gifted him.

Daohua nodded to herself as she pieced everything together. Smiling, she looked at Deshou. “Is your master sending supplies to that secluded residence?”

Deshou’s heart skipped a beat. He abruptly raised his head, his face full of shock.

How did Miss Yan know about this?
Since the Dragon Boat Festival this year, his master had been periodically sending food and drinks to that residence. Apart from Defu and himself, no one else was aware of it.

Seeing his reaction, Daohua smiled knowingly. “So it’s true. Xiao Yeyang, honestly! If he wanted to send things to that madam, why didn’t he just tell me? Now look—he’s run out of food again, hasn’t he?”

Judging by Deshou’s frequent trips here, she added, “You must have been running back and forth quite often. Doesn’t that get tiring?”

Deshou hung his head low, on the verge of tears.

He hadn’t said a word! How had Miss Yan figured out the existence of the former princess consort?
It was over. His master would probably kill him upon finding out.

His master had never been fond of discussing the former princess consort in front of others.

Daohua smiled at Deshou. “Wait here. I’ll have someone pick fresh vegetables from the fields. One cart should be enough, right?”

Deshou quickly nodded. One cart was more than enough—Miss Yan’s carts were always packed to the brim, and her portions were twice as generous as usual.

But Daohua continued, “On second thought, let’s make it two carts. One for your master and one for the madam in the secluded residence.”

If Xiao Yeyang was sending supplies to the madam, she must have some status. Who knows? She might even return to the palace someday.

If they were sending gifts, it would be best to be generous to leave a good impression.

Grandmother Yan added, “Let’s send some to Wenxiu and the others while we’re at it.”

Daohua smiled and nodded. “Don’t worry, Grandmother. I won’t forget about my eldest brother and the others.”

Not long after, Deshou left for Wangyue Academy with five carts full of vegetables and fruits.

Wangyue Academy.

Xiao Yeyang’s Courtyard

Looking at the five carts of vegetables and fruits Deshou had brought back, Xiao Yeyang was irritated. “Didn’t I tell you to be more careful? How did Daohua find out anyway?”

Deshou lowered his head, looking aggrieved. “Master, it really wasn’t my fault. Who could have predicted that Miss Yan and her grandmother would go out shopping and just so happen to pass by the fruit and vegetable shop?” And recognize him, no less!

Xiao Yeyang let out a sigh. “Forget it. She knows now, so be it. At most, Daohua will just think I’m a glutton.” His tone shifted as he frowned at the five carts of produce.

“I admit I eat a lot, but Daohua treats me like a pig, sending five carts at once. Does she want to stuff me to death?”

Deshou’s lips twitched as he quickly explained, “Two carts are for the Yan brothers, and one is for Young Masters Dong and Su.”

Although the academy had a cafeteria, the food wasn’t great. Most families with some means rented a courtyard to prepare their own meals, ensuring better food.

Although the Yan brothers didn’t have a separate courtyard, they could use Dong Yuanxuan’s kitchen.

Xiao Yeyang froze for a moment before dryly commenting, “Even two carts for them are excessive!”

Deshou glanced at his master, took a deep breath, and mustered the courage to say, “One cart is for the mistress of the secluded residence.”

As soon as he said this, Xiao Yeyang’s eyes widened in shock, and even Defu looked at him in astonishment.

Xiao Yeyang couldn’t believe what he’d heard. “What did you just say? Who is that cart for?”

Deshou immediately dropped to his knees. “Master, I swear I didn’t say a word. Miss Yan asked me if the food she sent wasn’t enough, and I just nodded slightly. I have no idea how she figured out that you were sending food to the secluded residence. Somehow, she even mentioned the mistress there and decided to send an extra cart.”

Xiao Yeyang frowned deeply and glanced at Defu.

Defu also knelt down immediately. “Master, I swear I’ve never told Miss Yan anything.”

Xiao Yeyang furrowed his brows. He trusted Defu and Deshou’s loyalty; they had been with him for a long time.

But apart from them, only Dong Yuanxuan and Su Hongxin knew a bit about his mother.

Could it be that one of them mentioned something to Daohua?

Xiao Yeyang shook his head. Those two knew his mother was a sensitive subject and wouldn’t dare to speak carelessly.

So, Daohua must have come up with it herself.

That girl had an uncanny ability to create stories. Who knew what kind of wild identity she had imagined for his mother now?

Thinking of Daohua’s curious and probing eyes, Xiao Yeyang felt a headache coming on.

That girl could be annoyingly smart at times. If she kept digging, it wouldn’t be long before his mother’s identity was exposed.

Remembering the negative reputation his mother had in the capital, Xiao Yeyang’s brows tightened with worry.

Would Daohua, a fan of Divorce Tales, view his mother the same way others did?

Chapter 215: No One Should Look Down on Anyone

Chapter 215: No One Should Look Down on Anyone

In the northern part of Zhongzhou Province, bordering Fenxi Province, when Commander Shen was escorting the grain seeds, a team of soldiers immediately came to meet him.

Commander Shen recognized the leader as a trusted confidant of Prefect Magistrate Guo and instantly felt a wave of relief.

After the incident where the grain seeds had been robbed last time, he had been on edge throughout the journey, afraid of any carelessness.

“Brother Lu Shuo.”

“Brother Shen.”

The two exchanged greetings.

Lu Shuo cupped his hands and expressed his gratitude. “Brother Shen, you’ve worked hard all the way.”

Commander Shen smiled and waved his hand. “There’s no need for such formalities, Brother Lu. We’re all working for the Prefect Magistrate.” He had once served under the late Marquis, and now, as a soldier under Marquis Guo, he naturally had to give his best in dealing with matters concerning the former master’s family.

Lu Shuo looked at the carts full of grain seeds and showed a pleased expression. “You managed to gather so many grain seeds?”

Commander Shen smiled. “It’s thanks to the young prince who stepped in and helped us secure over twenty thousand stones of grain from the Yan family.”

Seeing that the grain brought could make up for the previous loss, Lu Shuo felt a weight lift from his heart. He grinned and said, “Good, good. Let’s go, the Prefect Magistrate has been waiting for a long time. Let me take you to see him.”

Soon, the group arrived in the nearest prefectural city and met with Prefect Magistrate Guo.

“Well, well, well!”

Seeing the more than twenty thousand stones of grain his nephew had managed to gather, Prefect Magistrate Guo praised repeatedly. He then turned to Commander Shen. “Lifu, you’ve done a great service this time.”

Commander Shen immediately shook his head. “Prefect Magistrate, you’re being too kind. If it weren’t for Marquis Guo’s support back then, how would Lifu have had such honor today?”

Prefect Magistrate Guo patted Commander Shen on the shoulder, not continuing with further pleasantries. “I’ll be busy distributing the grain, so I might not be able to entertain you. Next time, when we return to Zhongzhou, I’ll invite you to enjoy some theater and wine.”

Commander Shen smiled in acknowledgment, knowing that the Prefect Magistrate was busy. He left with his subordinates to rest.

Once he left, an official came up to Prefect Magistrate Guo. “Prefect Magistrate, the prefects from the nearby regions have all arrived.”

Prefect Magistrate Guo nodded. With November approaching, the newly gathered grain had to be distributed quickly so the people could plant it.

“Once the grain is distributed, we need to ensure that no bandits try to steal it. This time, send more people for protection, and if anyone tries to block the road, kill them.”

Prefect Magistrate Guo said this with a murderous intent as he walked outside.

Just as he stepped out of the door, his personal guard, Gu Qiang, came running in excitedly. “Prefect Magistrate, in addition to the grain, the young prince has also sent a large cart of vegetables and fruits to honor you.”

Prefect Magistrate Guo paused in surprise. “What did you say? Yang’er sent what?”

Gu Qiang excitedly replied, “Vegetables and fruits.” Then, with a regretful expression, he added, “It’s a pity that one basket of leafy greens spoiled, but it’s fine. There are still many fresh cucumbers and beans. Also, there are several large crates of persimmons, apples, dates, and pears.”

Upon hearing this, Prefect Magistrate Guo immediately broke into a broad smile, laughing loudly a few times. Then he said, “It was worth the effort to teach him. I even took on this tough task of clearing the bandits just to be closer to him.”

He paused, a look of sentimentality in his eyes. “Yang’er will be fifteen next year, an adult already. He’s becoming more sensible. He knows that here we can only eat pickled vegetables with some meat, and yet, he still took the trouble to send a whole cart of fresh greens to honor me. Good, very good!”

“Go, tell the kitchen to stir-fry some vegetables tonight. We’ll have a change of pace. I’ve been eating meat all this time, and my stomach isn’t feeling well.”

“Yes!” Gu Qiang replied enthusiastically.

During the winter, vegetables were already scarce, and in Fenxi, where there had been both disasters and bandit troubles, the people could barely fill their stomachs, let alone grow vegetables.

After arriving here, they had to make do with pickled vegetables, and the quantity was small.

Prefect Magistrate Guo had been craving fresh, crisp vegetables for a while.

The young prince was a good person.

Meanwhile, in Zhongzhou Province, at Wangyue Academy.

Xiao Yeyang, who had been "friend-zoned," looked displeased as he stared at the only plate of vegetables on the table. Furrowing his brows, he asked Defu, “What’s going on here?”

“In the past, every time Daohua sent vegetables and fruits, it was enough for me to last until the end of the month, with some leftovers.”

“I even went to Daohua’s house again in the middle of this month. Given her personality, she must have prepared more food for me. But now, less than half a month later, how are the vegetables already gone? And what about the fruits?”

He eats an apple every day, as Daohua said it’s good for his health.

Defu lowered his head and said weakly, “Master, the vegetables and fruits sent in the middle of the month should have been sent to Fenxi with the grain seeds.”

Xiao Yeyang was stunned. “They were sent to my uncle’s place?”

Defu glanced up at Xiao Yeyang’s expression and, seeing no signs of anger, cautiously said, “Master, how about I write to Miss Yan and have her send another cart of produce?”

Xiao Yeyang immediately glared at him. “No!” His face became a little awkward. “Daohua gave them to me out of kindness, so we can’t refuse, but to go and ask for more... what does that make me look like? Does she think I’m a glutton?”

Defu lowered his head and pouted.

Master, aren’t you just a glutton?

Back in the capital, Master was never protective of his food. Even when there were leftovers from the imperial meals, he would leave them behind for his personal eunuch.

Compared to other princes’ personal eunuchs, he had much more to eat.

But once they arrived in Zhongzhou, that luxury was gone.

The vegetables Miss Yan sent, Master nearly cleaned the plate every meal. Even if he wanted to eat the leftovers, there were none.

Defu fell silent for a moment. “If this goes on, by the end of November, Master will only be able to eat the vegetables bought from outside.”

Upon hearing this, Xiao Yeyang’s face fell.

Before, he never thought the vegetables bought outside were bad—so long as they tasted good, it didn’t matter. But since he got used to the ones Daohua sent, he couldn’t bear to eat the ones from elsewhere anymore.

It wasn’t that he was picky; the taste was just different.

Suddenly, Xiao Yeyang’s eyes brightened. “I’ve got it! Daohua opened a fruit and vegetable shop in Xingzhou City, right? You can go to the shop and buy some—quietly, don’t let anyone find out.”

Defu nodded in agreement but inwardly felt speechless.

Miss Yan was generous, and she and the master were on such good terms. Why couldn’t he just ask for a cart of vegetables and fruits? Even if Miss Yan knew Master was a glutton, what of it? Wasn’t she a glutton herself?

Who was in a position to criticize?

Time passed, and it was mid-November.

Xiao Yeyang received a letter from his uncle, confirming that the grain seeds had been distributed to the people and planted in the fields, which finally put his mind at ease.

With that worry gone, his appetite grew, and he ate more than ever.

Previously, he only went to Xingzhou every few days for shopping, but now he was going every three or four days.

It wasn’t that he didn’t want to buy more, but Daohua’s fruit and vegetable shop was doing so well that in order to ensure more people could get fresh produce, they limited how much each person could buy.

If they didn’t do this, some wealthy families would buy everything in the shop.

As the year-end approached, preparations for the New Year’s gifts began.

To train Daohua, Madam Li handed over the task of preparing the New Year’s gifts for her sister-in-law in the capital entirely to Daohua.

So, Daohua would occasionally take Grandma Yan out for a stroll, under the pretense of checking the market prices for the year’s gifts.

The two of them didn’t take a carriage but walked.

The street was bustling with activity, various vendors shouting their wares, and people coming and going. Both of them enjoyed watching the lively, bustling scene full of human warmth.

“Hey, that person looks familiar. I think I’ve seen him somewhere.”

As they passed Daohua’s vegetable shop, Daohua, who was happily admiring the good business, suddenly spotted a familiar figure in the crowd.

Seeing her granddaughter standing still, Grandma Yan tugged at her arm. “What are you stopping for? Do you know that person?”

Daohua gasped. “I remember now! I’ve seen him at the palace. He’s one of Xiao Yeyang’s people.”
