Chapter 292: The Lecture

 Chapter 292: The Lecture

"Why bother provoking her?"

Xiao Yeyang shook his head at Yan Wenxiu, who was left speechless by the rebuke.

"Exactly, brother!"

Yan Wenkai approached, patted his elder brother's shoulder, and earnestly advised, "You still don’t understand our sister, do you? She’s smart, quick-witted, and articulate. If she’s in the wrong, maybe you’d have a chance. But this time, she’s clearly in the right. How could you outargue her?"

"And now look—got yourself scolded, didn’t you?"

Serves you right!

Yan Wenxiu was about to speak, but Xiao Yeyang glanced over and said, "Daohua isn’t like other noblewomen. Why do you insist on using conventional standards to restrain her? Can’t you just let her live happily and freely?"

In his opinion, teasing a merchant’s child wasn’t a big deal.

Besides, Daohua had been polite enough—she didn’t name names or embarrass anyone outright. She merely made a few indirect remarks. What was wrong with that?

Yan Wenkai nodded in agreement. "Exactly, brother. Girls have delicate minds and think deeper than we do. We should just give way to them. Why would you go and make trouble for yourself?"

Hearing this, Su Hongxin immediately chimed in with a grin, "Wow, Yan Wenkai, who would’ve thought you could be so considerate of women?"

Yan Wenkai puffed up with pride. "I only have one sister, of course I’ll spoil her."

Yan Wenxiu glanced over. "What do you mean, one sister? Where does that leave Yihuan and the others?"

Yan Wenkai froze, then chuckled sheepishly. "Slip of the tongue, slip of the tongue. I meant one full-blooded sister." He muttered under his breath, "I only like my eldest sister anyway."

Seeing him like this, Yan Wenxiu sighed and was about to say something when Dong Yuanxuan approached, also patting him on the shoulder. "Wenxiu, having a sister like Yan Yiyi isn’t a bad thing. Being indulgent toward family is a virtue in my book."

He himself was extremely lenient with his sister Yuanyao.

Coming from a noble family meant living with many constraints, so his sister's unrestrained, joyful smile was especially precious to him. He cherished her laughter and wanted to protect it forever.

He sighed as he spoke.

"Now that our sisters are growing up so quickly, they won’t stay home much longer. A little indulgence won’t hurt."

Yan Wenxiu opened his mouth, but before he could speak, Zhou Chengye came over, adding his voice to the discussion. "I understand you’re worried about stirring up trouble and affecting the relationship between your maternal family and the Fang family. But honestly, with both families already betrothed, small matters like this are nothing to make a fuss over."

"But in this case, I’m standing with Daohua."

"Your family is simple—your father only has two concubines—so you might not know much about the petty squabbles among women. My mother is considered formidable, yet even she has suffered at the hands of my father’s concubines."

"Let me tell you, no woman is truly simple. That Sun family girl clearly has ulterior motives. If you let her off this time, who knows what trouble she’ll stir up in the future."

"Sometimes, a little pushback is necessary. Being overly accommodating doesn’t work, especially when the Fang family is clearly trying to latch onto your family. If they still don’t treat your cousin well, that’s truly out of line."

Yan Wenxiu stood there, stunned, as everyone took turns berating him. He felt utterly defeated.

All he did was offer a word of advice to his eldest sister out of consideration for their uncle and aunt’s reputation, worried about the matter escalating. Yet he was scolded by his sister and bombarded by his friends, leaving him no chance to speak.

Taking a deep breath, Yan Wenxiu reflected on the lecture. Despite feeling chastised, he realized that their words held merit.

His sister's words, in particular, struck a chord.

He knew he had many shortcomings. Growing up in a simple environment, he often failed to consider things thoroughly. Though his father had concubines, his mother had never complained in front of him. As a result, he’d never truly considered her feelings.

Now, thinking back, he felt deeply unfilial.

Every time his eldest sister clashed with their father, it was to defend their mother.

And what about him?
He had never once stood up for his mother!

This realization left Yan Wenxiu filled with remorse.

Seeing him fall silent, Xiao Yeyang and the others said no more. They turned their attention to the distant group flying kites, laughing and chatting about other topics.

Meanwhile, Fang Hao watched the lively figure in blue on the grass, his emotions in turmoil.

Though Daohua's words were harsh, they were undeniably insightful.

Glancing at his nephew, who stood with his head bowed, Fang Hao said flatly, "Don’t blame Yan Yi for being blunt. If it weren’t for them, I would’ve had a few words for you myself."

"It’s one thing to charm women, but failing to turn them down? That’s incompetence."

"Never hesitate when making decisions. Life only gives you so many opportunities to move forward. If you’re indecisive, you may lose them."

"Take the Li family, for example. They’ve only just risen in the last two or three years. They lack foundation and connections and need the Fang family’s support in the business world. Otherwise, your engagement to the Li girl would’ve been in jeopardy."

"Yan Yi made a valid point. Since both families are seeking mutual benefit, you should fulfill your part of the bargain."

"I don’t care whether your feelings for the Sun girl are real or fake, but you need to understand that you can’t have your cake and eat it too. Choose one, and let the other go."

"Throughout history, those who’ve been greedy for both have never met a good end."

"Our branch of the family rests entirely on your shoulders. If you don’t handle your relationship with your wife’s family well, you might end up truly isolated."

These words deeply moved Fang Liangji. When Fang Hao finished, he bowed deeply. "Thank you, Uncle, for your guidance. I recognize my mistakes."

Fang Hao nodded and said no more.

Sometimes, it’s best to stop once the point is made. Overexplaining only leads to annoyance.

Fang Liangji glanced at Fang Hao, then turned to look at the Young Prince and his group a short distance to the left. After a moment, he shifted his gaze to the right, where Sun Yongyi and his companions stood a few meters away, sighing inwardly.

Is this the difference between merchant families and noble households?

Merchants tend to focus on the immediate and the superficial, while aristocratic families delve into the essence of matters, emphasizing long-term benefits. Even the Yan family daughter, despite being a woman, had astonishing knowledge and insight.

Now he finally understood why merchants were willing to bleed themselves dry just to associate with noble families.

When you're operating on different levels, the issues you consider are entirely different. Sometimes, a few words of wisdom could benefit a person for a lifetime.

This time, he had truly gained a lot.

"Yiyi, my kite is higher than yours. I win!"

"That doesn’t count! My kite just fell. Give me a moment, and my pig head will definitely fly higher than yours."

"Hahaha! That’s hilarious. Eagles are naturally the kings of the sky. How could your pig head possibly compare to mine?"

"A hero isn’t defined by their origins—pig heads can soar to the heavens too!"

Hearing the playful banter in the distance, smiles appeared on Xiao Yeyang and the others’ faces.

Nearby, Fang Hao couldn’t take his eyes off the scene. His gaze stayed on the lively figure in blue running joyfully across the grass.

One moment, she was arguing with her elder brother; the next, she was laughing and playing with her friends. Someone like this must have an incredibly open heart.

"Yiyi..."

What a fitting name!

Chapter 291: Speechless

 Chapter 291: Speechless

Because of one remark from Xiao Yeyang, everyone stood up.

Xiao Yeyang glanced at Daohua briefly before leaving the pavilion.

Daohua and Dong Yuanyao, holding hands, quickly followed him.

Next came Yan Wenkai and Su Hongxin.

Dong Yuanxuan and Zhou Chengye nodded to Fang Hao and the others before leaving.

Fang Hao stood still. Without an invitation, it wouldn’t be appropriate for them to follow. Since he didn’t move, Fang Liangji and the others naturally didn’t dare to either.

The three brothers, Yan Wenxiu and Li Chenyi, chatted about their experiences in the capital while walking out of the pavilion. Seeing Fang Liangji and his group standing motionless, they glanced at Xiao Yeyang and the others, who were already ahead, hesitated briefly, and then smiled, "Since we rarely get to enjoy flowers together, let’s go as a group."

Hearing this, Fang Liangji’s expression brightened. "Sure!"

He wasn’t eager to curry favor with the Young Prince or other nobles but felt it would be embarrassing and disrespectful if his uncle and Sun Yongyi, their guests, were excluded from the outing and interactions with his fiancée’s family. Fortunately, the eldest son of the Yan family was approachable and considerate.

Soon, the group left the pavilion together, and Fang Hao took the opportunity to strike up a conversation with Yan Wenxiu.

As the direct heir of the Fang clan in Jiguan, Fang Hao was well-versed in various topics. Despite his youth, he was already a successful candidate in the imperial examination, and before long, he was happily engaged in conversation with Yan Wenxiu.

Li Chenyi, meanwhile, slowed his pace, pulling Fang Liangji aside to quietly ask, "What did you do to upset my cousin?"

Fang Liangji’s expression became uneasy. After stammering for a while, he finally explained the situation.

Li Chenyi frowned slightly, casting a glance at Sun Jiayue, who was walking ahead. His expression turned cold. "Liangji, we’ve known each other for a while, and now that your family and mine are connected through marriage, I won’t beat around the bush."

"Do you have any inappropriate relations with Sun Jiayue?"

Fang Liangji’s face turned pale. "Of course not!" His voice grew sharp with anxiety, catching the attention of Yan Wenxiu and the others walking ahead. They turned to look, prompting Fang Liangji to stiffen awkwardly.

Once their attention shifted away, Fang Liangji hastily explained, "I swear, I have absolutely no interest in Sun Jiayue! If I did, I would’ve already asked my mother to arrange a marriage proposal."

Li Chenyi snorted coldly but said nothing further.

Seeing his reaction, Fang Liangji grew increasingly nervous, struggling to explain further. "Today, I came out to enjoy the flowers with my uncle. Thinking it would be dull with just the two of us, I invited Sun Yongyi to join us. How was I supposed to know he’d bring his sister along?"

When Li Chenyi remained silent, Fang Liangji quickly added, "I promise I’ll avoid Sun Jiayue entirely in the future. Is that acceptable?"

Li Chenyi remained quiet for a moment before speaking. "Just a few days before your engagement, you were seen on Anle Street. My parents and second uncle were already displeased."

"And now, only three days after your engagement, my cousin sees you with Sun Jiayue in such an inappropriate manner. Frankly, I’m not happy about it."

"You always have your reasons, but let me ask you—after you marry Zixuan, will you still use similar excuses to make her unhappy?"

Fang Liangji repeatedly assured, "There won’t be a next time."

Li Chenyi stared at Fang Liangji intently, making him squirm with discomfort, before finally saying, "I hope you keep your word."

Once Li Chenyi rejoined Yan Wenxiu, Fang Liangji wiped the sweat from his forehead.

Goodness, he should’ve stayed home today.

First, he was put in a tight spot by the Yan family’s daughter, and now he was threatened by his future brother-in-law. Life was truly tough.

Fang Yiyun looked at her elder brother with concern. "Brother, are you alright?"

Fang Liangji was about to say he was fine when he noticed Sun Jiayue walking toward him. Without a word, he quickly strode over to join Li Chenyi and the others, signaling Sun Yongyi with his eyes to keep his sister in check.

He truly couldn’t handle any more trouble!

"Where are we going?"

Daohua and Dong Yuanyao followed Xiao Yeyang, noticing they were moving further away from the garden. Unable to resist, they asked.

Xiao Yeyang pointed to the sky.

Daohua looked up and saw kites flying in the air. "Are we going kite flying?"

Xiao Yeyang glanced at her with a faint smile. "You catch on quickly."

Daohua shrugged. You made it too obvious.

Hearing that they were going kite flying, Dong Yuanyao immediately brightened up. She grabbed Daohua’s hand excitedly. "Let’s have a competition to see whose kite flies higher and farther!"

Daohua immediately agreed. "You’re on."

Behind the Huashen Temple was a vast, open grassland. By the time Daohua and her group arrived, many people were already flying kites there.

As soon as they arrived, a servant brought over three kites.

Daohua looked at the three kites. "Why are there only three?"

Xiao Yeyang replied, "Kites are for young ladies like you to play with. Of course, there are only three."

Dong Yuanyao frowned. "That’s not right. Yiyi and I are only two people. Why is there an extra one?"

Xiao Yeyang explained, "Su Hongxin’s younger sister also came along. One is reserved for her."

Daohua and Dong Yuanyao both nodded.

From the three kites, Dong Yuanyao quickly grabbed one first. "I want this eagle kite."

Daohua glanced at the butterfly kite and the pig-head kite in her hands, frowning. "Who made this kite? How could they make it into a pig's head?"

Dong Yuanyao immediately responded, "Then take the butterfly one."

Daohua hesitated for a moment before shaking her head. "Leaving the pig-head kite for someone as gentle and graceful as Sister Su doesn’t seem right, does it?" Saying this, she imagined Su Shiyu running with a pig-head kite, and the thought made her burst out laughing.

"Forget it, I’ll take it!"

Nearby, Xiao Yeyang had been watching Daohua. When he saw her choose the pig-head kite, the corners of his mouth couldn't help but curl upwards.

Defu, standing off to the side, rolled his eyes dramatically.

The master is just too ridiculous.

Even if he was born in the Year of the Pig, what could it mean that Miss Yan chose the pig-head kite?

Soon, with the maids’ help, Dong Yuanyao's kite soared high into the sky.

Daohua insisted on flying hers herself. She ran across the meadow with the kite but managed only to get it a few meters off the ground, where it wobbled precariously, ready to fall at any moment.

Seeing Daohua running out of breath with such poor results, Xiao Yeyang couldn’t bear it anymore. He walked over, took the string from her hand, and skillfully launched the kite into the sky.

"It’s flying!"

Watching the kite rise higher and higher, Daohua’s smile grew brighter and brighter. When it finally stabilized, she eagerly turned to Xiao Yeyang. "Give it to me, I want to do it."

Xiao Yeyang handed her the string and, seeing her eyes sparkling with joy, teased, "Not angry anymore, are you?"

Daohua, busy letting out more string, paused at his words and looked at him in confusion.

Xiao Yeyang smiled faintly. "About the Fang Liangji matter."

Daohua scoffed. "He’s not worth my anger. But after today, I’m definitely telling Uncle and Aunt."

"He’s already apologized, and Cousin Chenyi spoke to him too. Don’t be so unforgiving; it won’t look good for Uncle and Aunt either."

Yan Wenxiu walked over, followed a few steps behind by Dong Yuanxuan and the others.

Hearing this, Daohua bristled. She shoved the string back into Xiao Yeyang’s hands and said sternly, "Brother, I can’t agree with you. Let me explain."

Yan Wenxiu, knowing his sister’s personality, knew she wouldn’t let it go. He nodded indulgently. "Go ahead. I’m all ears."

Daohua began, "First, the person Fang Liangji should apologize to isn’t me but Cousin Zixuan and Uncle and Aunt. His public apology today was only because I embarrassed him."

"Second, Fang Liangji and Cousin Zixuan are already engaged. As someone with a betrothal, shouldn’t he be mindful of his behavior?"

"Sun Jiayue made the first move; that’s a reflection of her upbringing, so I won’t comment. But Fang Liangji? How could he not firmly reject her ambiguous actions? Delaying and hesitating like that—doesn’t that give her false hope?"

Yan Wenxiu thought for a moment and said, "Cousin Chenyi told me that Fang Liangji didn’t want to embarrass Sun Yongyi."

Daohua sneered. "He cares about a friend’s pride, but does he not realize that his attitude and behavior hurt Cousin Zixuan?"

"What, he can’t bear to damage his friend’s pride but doesn’t mind making Cousin Zixuan upset? That’s unreasonable."

Yan Wenxiu took a deep breath. "Husband and wife should be one."

Daohua interrupted sharply, "Brother, by ‘husband and wife should be one,’ do you mean the husband gets to act as he pleases outside while the wife swallows her grievances at home?"

Yan Wenxiu opened his mouth but didn’t know how to respond. "I didn’t say that."

Daohua continued, "But that’s what you’re thinking. You believe women should selflessly sacrifice for men, and if they get upset over small matters, they’re seen as improper or ungracious."

"What does ‘husband and wife should be one’ mean?"

"It means sharing hardships, never abandoning each other, and supporting one another—that’s what it means."

"It doesn’t mean the husband indulges in debauchery outside while the wife stays home, dutifully caring for the family, handling household affairs, and enduring silently without complaint."

"Why should it be like that?"

"People say, ‘Treat others as you would be treated.’ If someone gives you genuine care, shouldn’t you reciprocate? If you can’t, let them go. Don’t harm others and yourself."

Just as Yan Wenxiu was about to say something, Daohua raised three fingers.

"Third, why did the Fang family arrange a marriage with the Li family? It was for mutual benefit, wasn’t it? Shouldn’t they then show some gratitude? They can’t just take advantage and then humiliate the Li family’s daughter, can they?"

"As a man, shouldn’t he show responsibility and courage? If he’s already engaged, he should be committed to his fiancée. Don’t talk about true love or being forced into it—what was he doing before? Nobody compelled him."

"Since he made a choice, he must bear the responsibilities that come with it."

After finishing, Daohua glanced at Dong Yuanxuan and the others, who were standing a few steps away. With a cold snort, she took the string from Xiao Yeyang’s hands and walked off to find Dong Yuanyao, kite in hand.

Xiao Yeyang stared at his now-empty hands and rubbed his nose.

This girl even vented her anger on him!

He then glanced at Dong Yuanxuan and the others, who looked equally embarrassed, and suddenly felt a sense of balance. At least he wasn’t the only one on the receiving end of her irritation.

Chapter 290: Impressive

 Chapter 290: Impressive

Seeing how much trouble Sun Jiayue was causing, interrupting and defending Fang Liangji, she could no longer hold back. She walked in front of Daohua and Dong Yuanyao to speak on his behalf: "Two younger sisters..."

"Who is your younger sister?" Dong Yuanyao immediately cut in coldly, interrupting Sun Jiayue without giving her any face.

"I..." Sun Jiayue didn't expect Dong Yuanyao to be so direct. She glanced around at the people in the pavilion, feeling both ashamed and frustrated. Within moments, tears filled her eyes, and she stood there, clenching her teeth, looking utterly helpless.

However, no one responded to her at all. The group of people, including Xiao Yeyang, acted as though she didn't exist. The only person who threw her a disdainful glance was Yan Wenkai.

As soon as Sun Jiayue spoke, Sun Yongyi knew things were about to go south.

The children of official families typically looked down on the merchant class. His younger sister making such a bold move and calling them sisters was reckless.

Sun Yongyi quickly stepped forward with a smile: "Please, don't be angry, my younger sister lost her manners. I hope you can forgive her."

Dong Yuanyao snorted. Just as she was about to say something, she saw her elder brother glance over. She immediately pursed her lips and decided not to continue the conversation.

Dong Yuanxuan laughed: "It’s just a small quarrel. There’s no need to take it to heart."

Sun Yongyi expressed his gratitude with a smile and quickly led his younger sister aside.

Sun Jiayue, looking reluctant, was shot a fierce glare by Sun Yongyi before she meekly retreated.

Fang Yiyun, sensing the awkward atmosphere, smiled and spoke up, turning toward Daohua and Dong Yuanyao: "Miss Dong, Miss Yan, the glutinous rice cake, once properly made, isn’t sticky. If you’re interested, I’d like to invite you both to my house sometime so my family’s cook can demonstrate."

Daohua and Dong Yuanyao exchanged a look, both having a speechless expression on their faces.

Were they really talking about the glutinous rice cakes?

Fang Yiyun didn't seem too bright.

Daohua twitched the corner of her mouth and simply turned her head, not responding.

The Fang family only connected with them because of her Zhixuan's cousin. Since Fang Liangji was already betrothed, and still wasn’t keeping his distance from other women, why should she care about giving the Fang family face?

Daohua ignored her, and Dong Yuanyao didn’t care either.

If not for the Yan family’s reputation, she wouldn’t have even appeared at this gathering with children of the merchant class.

Sitting aside, Fang Hao had the impulse to cover his head.

He knew the collateral branches of the Fang family had poor manners, but he hadn’t expected them to lack intelligence as well.

As an elder of the Fang family, Fang Hao had no choice but to step in with a forced smile: "What nonsense are you talking? Don’t you know that the cooks from the Dong and Yan families are no less capable than ours? Why do you have to be so flattering?"

Fang Yiyun’s face stiffened: "My niece misspoke, please, Miss Dong, Miss Yan, don’t be upset."

Daohua waved her hand: "There’s nothing to be upset about. We didn’t know each other before, and we still don’t. If we can chat, we’ll talk more. If not, we should simply part ways instead of forcing unnecessary pleasantries, or it’ll just make everyone uncomfortable."

With that, she picked up a piece of glutinous rice cake and gave Fang Liangji a mocking smile.

"For instance, someone might like glutinous rice cake, but someone else insists on serving him red bean paste cake. If the person is straightforward, they should speak up immediately instead of accepting the red bean paste cake while secretly thinking about the glutinous rice cake. That would be disrespectful both to the cake and the person offering it."

"Don’t you agree, Young Master Fang?"

Fang Liangji took a deep breath. Today, he truly experienced how sharp the daughters of the officials were. Daohua’s subtle words, while not directly showing any hostility, made him feel utterly ashamed.

Last time, when he went to An Le Street, Zhixuan's cousin followed him to the theater and even fought in the theater.

Now, today, encountering the scene with Sun Jiayue, he was probably furious, wasn’t he?

At least, Zhixuan had such a protective cousin, which was fortunate for him.

However, he felt that dealing with Zhixuan’s cousin was incredibly troublesome.

Fang Liangji walked up to Daohua and bowed deeply, making a 90-degree bow: "Miss Yan, today’s incident is all my fault. I’ve been careless, but I will improve in the future."

Daohua raised an eyebrow.

This one knew how to humble himself.

Fang Hao finally breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, this nephew of his still had some sense.

Daohua didn’t stop there and continued: "Many people make promises, even swearing by heaven, but very few actually follow through. Just saying but not doing seems to be a common issue with many people."

Fang Liangji raised an eyebrow and sighed inwardly. He decided that in the future, he should avoid dealing with Zhixuan’s cousin. She was too difficult to handle!

While he was still pondering how to clear the air and ease Daohua’s hostility toward him, someone else entered the pavilion.

"Little sister, what are you doing?"

Yan Wenxiu had seen from a distance that someone was apologizing to his sister, and he couldn’t help but speak up when he saw that she hadn’t yet stopped her confrontation with the other person.

"Big Brother!"

Upon seeing Yan Wenxiu, Daohua’s face lit up with a smile, and she quickly walked toward him. "When did you come back?"

Yan Wenxiu smiled and replied, "I’ve been back for a few days." He greeted Xiao Yeyang and the others before turning his attention to Fang Liangji. "And who might this be?"

Daohua looked away, not saying a word.

Li Chenyi, who had come with Yan Wenxiu, immediately chimed in: "This is the young master from the Fang family who is betrothed to Zhixuan."

Yan Wenxiu immediately smiled and greeted Fang Liangji: "My apologies, my father was busy with the handover, and I had to help my mother with some matters. I wasn’t able to join in the celebration of your engagement with cousin Zhixuan'."

Fang Liangji, seeing that Yan Wenxiu was polite and respectful, with no sign of disdain, immediately smiled and replied: "It’s an honor."

Daohua then asked, "Big Brother, did Father and the others go to Ningmen Prefecture?"

Yan Wenxiu nodded: "Father needed to take office on time, so he left the day after he returned. Mother and Grandmother also left by boat on the same day. I was the last to leave."

Daohua nodded, knowing the crowd was too large to ask more questions, and she returned to sit beside Dong Yuanyao.

Fang Hao had been observing Yan Wenxiu since he entered the pavilion. Seeing him greet everyone with warm smiles and courteous greetings, Fang Hao couldn’t help but nod in approval.

Yan Wenxiu’s arrival made the atmosphere in the pavilion much more harmonious.

Daohua didn’t continue to push Fang Liangji; she wasn’t afraid of him, but she wasn’t going to embarrass him in front of everyone. She simply sat there, playing with the silk cord around her waist in a disinterested manner.

Dong Yuanyao was also bored. There wasn’t much in the pavilion to interest her, and the tea snacks didn’t appeal to her at all.

Seeing this, Xiao Yeyang turned to Defu and whispered a few words. Defu nodded and quickly left.

After a while, Defu returned, nodded at Xiao Yeyang, and the latter stood up.

"We’ve been sitting here long enough, shall we go elsewhere?"

Hearing this, Daohua and Dong Yuanyao immediately stood up.

Chapter 289: Provocation

 Chapter 289: Provocation

"Ji Guang Fang family?"

Xiao Yeyang raised his eyebrows, examining the young man before him. "Is the head of the Guozijian Fang family your relative?"

Fang Hao respectfully replied, "Yes, Your Highness, he is my uncle."

Xiao Yeyang nodded. Last time, during the Hong disaster in Ji Guang, the Fang family had helped his maternal uncle greatly, so he had to give them some respect and exchange a few words.

"What brings you here?"

"A younger member of my family is getting engaged, so I came to congratulate them," said Fang Hao, pointing to Fang Liangji. "This is my nephew." He then said to Fang Liangji, "Hurry up and greet His Highness."

Fang Liangji stepped forward nervously. "I am Fang Liangji, Your Highness."

Xiao Yeyang waved his hand nonchalantly, glancing at Fang Liangji before shifting his gaze away. He didn't say anything.

As for the others who came with Fang Hao and Fang Liangji, including Sun Yongyi, Xiao Yeyang didn’t even spare them a glance.

Official sons never sought closeness with merchants' children. Though not overtly contemptuous, they would certainly not initiate friendship. They were from entirely different worlds.

Dong Yuanxuan, Su Hongxin, and Zhou Chengye only exchanged pleasantries with Fang Hao, introduced themselves, and nodded to Fang Liangji, which was as much of a greeting as they gave.

At this point, Yan Wenkai walked over with a smile. "Isn't this my future brother-in-law?"

"Fourth Brother, stop with your nonsense!"

Daohua interrupted Yan Wenkai.

Yan Wenkai looked back in surprise. "Isn’t he engaged to my cousin Zixuan? I don’t see anything wrong with calling him brother-in-law."

Daohua glanced at Fang Liangji and said coolly, "They are engaged, not married."

Yan Wenkai laughed. "What’s the difference?"

Daohua replied, "Of course there's a difference. Engagement is engagement, marriage is marriage. You called him too early."

Yan Wenkai quickly realized something was off. He looked at his sister, then at the awkward-looking Fang Liangji. Had he done something to upset her?

Xiao Yeyang, seeing Daohua fuming, lowered his head and thought for a moment before smiling and asking, "I saw you looking at that pavilion just now. Shall we go sit there?"

Daohua immediately nodded. "Sure, I saw Young Master Fang enjoying a snack there. I want to try some too."

"And me," Dong Yuanxuan chimed in. "I want to see what delicious cakes he’s eating, and why he needs someone else to feed him."

Hearing their words, both Xiao Yeyang and Dong Yuanyao were moved, while Fang Liangji turned red with embarrassment.

Fang Hao furrowed his brow and shot an unhappy glance at Fang Liangji and Sun Yongyi.

"You two really have no shame!"

Dong Yuanxuan smiled and said to Fang Hao, "My little sister is being rude. Please don’t mind her."

Fang Hao quickly smiled in response, "No, no, Young Master Dong is too kind."

The group then headed toward the pavilion, with Fang Hao and his party bringing up the rear.

Looking at Daohua and Dong Yuanyao walking in front, Xiao Yeyang’s eyes flickered. "So it’s them."

Although he had suspected their identities when he saw them at the Bai Xi Lou, he didn’t know for sure until now.

The one in the blue cloak was the daughter of Yan, the new Prefect Magistrate of Ningmen Prefecture; the one in the red cloak was the daughter of the Bu Zheng Shi family.

Fang Liangji asked in a low voice, "Uncle, do you know them?"

Fang Hao didn’t answer. Instead, he glanced at Fang Liangji. "If those Yan girls cause you trouble later, you’d better handle it. I think you understand their meaning, right?"

Fang Liangji froze for a moment, seemingly unsure.

Seeing his confusion, Fang Hao sighed and said, "Engaged and then breaking off an engagement, that’s not uncommon. Be careful."

Fang Liangji’s face changed dramatically, and he became filled with regret.

He hadn’t expected that Sun Jiayue feeding him snacks would be witnessed by the Yan girls.

Sun Yongyi patted his shoulder apologetically. "Sorry, Jiayue caused trouble."

He knew his sister liked his friend, and although the family elders didn't oppose the two families coming together, the Fang family didn’t approve of the match.

He had only invited Sun Jiayue today because she begged him to.

In the pavilion, Sun Jiayue and several other girls saw Daohua’s group entering and stood up, shyly glancing at Xiao Yeyang and the others.

Daohua walked into the pavilion and smiled at Sun Jiayue. "And you are?"

Sun Jiayue bowed to Xiao Yeyang and the others before smiling and introducing herself, "I am Sun Jiayue, the daughter of the president of the Zhongzhou Merchants' Association."

The other girls also greeted them one by one.

Although the greetings were directed at Daohua and Dong Yuanyao, their eyes were fixed on Xiao Yeyang and the others.

Daohua and Dong Yuanxuan, who had been unwillingly used as stepping stones, found the situation quite unpleasant. They gave perfunctory replies before heading straight to the area where the snacks were placed.

"I don’t look down on merchant families, but some of their rules are just so inappropriate. Only daughters from such families would introduce themselves to a man they’ve just met," Dong Yuanyao said with a touch of disdain.

Daohua's expression remained neutral. To her, exchanging names wasn’t an issue, but the fact that someone engaged was still accepting food from other women—this, she couldn’t accept.

As Daohua took a piece of cake, Yan Wenkai walked over with a smile. "What kind of dessert is this? Is it good?"

Just then, Fang Liangji entered the pavilion. Daohua’s eyes shifted, and she said, "This is glutinous rice cake. As for whether it’s good, you should ask Young Master Fang."

Fang Liangji paused for a moment and then forced a smile.

Dong Yuanyao, who also disliked indecisive men, mocked, "Young Master Fang, don’t just smile and stay silent. If it’s good, I’ll have my kitchen make some when I get home."

Fang Liangji replied weakly, "It’s... alright."

Daohua sneered and casually tossed the rice cake back into the plate. "Young Master Fang must be tired of his family’s snacks and wanted to try something new. Even if it’s only 'alright,' you can’t bring yourself to spit it out, huh?"

Yan Wenkai realized his sister was getting frustrated, but since Fang Liangji was soon to be his future brother-in-law, he didn’t want to make things awkward. He smiled and walked up to Fang Liangji.

"Future brother-in-law, or no, Fang Xiong, I think we should be more careful with food. If we can avoid eating things from outside, it’s better, to prevent any stomach issues."

Daohua continued, "Stomach issues are one thing, but some cakes are so sticky they get stuck in your teeth and you can’t get rid of them."

Dong Yuanyao shook her head. "Having stomach issues isn’t a small matter. If this glutinous rice cake conflicts with other food in your stomach, you could end up losing half your life."

Yan Wenkai was shocked. "Lose your life? That can’t be true!"

Daohua replied, "Even if you don’t lose your life, you’ll be in pain for days. Fourth Brother, don’t you remember what happened in Xingyun Prefecture last time when you got so sick?"

Thinking back to that experience, Yan Wenkai shivered and quickly agreed, "Yes, yes, this glutinous rice cake is sticky and hard to digest. It’s really not a good dessert. Fang Xiong, you shouldn’t eat it anymore."

Although Yan Wenkai didn’t quite understand the direction of the conversation, his words ended up aligning perfectly with Daohua and Dong Yuanxuan’s.

The group at the pavilion, seeing Daohua and Dong Yuanyao jointly teasing Fang Liangji, were entertained, though they didn’t understand why the two girls were upset with him.

Fang Hao’s gaze shifted between Daohua and Dong Yuanyao. Seeing his nephew at a loss for words, he shook his head with a sigh.

He was really unlucky to meet these two mischievous girls.

Meanwhile, Sun Yongyi and Sun Jiayue looked increasingly uncomfortable.

Chapter 288: Flower Festival

 Chapter 288: Flower Festival

"Big Sister!" "Sister Zixuan!"

After admiring the bridal gifts for a while, Daohua and Li Zixin entered Li Zixuan’s room, just in time to see her holding a golden hairpin with red ruby and pearl inlays, smiling shyly while looking down.

Seeing her like this, Daohua and Li Zixin exchanged glances and both chuckled, covering their mouths.

Li Zixuan quickly put the hairpin down and glared at the two younger girls with a playful reproach: "What are you laughing at?" When she noticed they were still staring at her, she felt even more embarrassed and had to cover her face with a handkerchief. However, she felt that this wasn’t quite right and quickly put the handkerchief down again.

Daohua smiled and walked up to her, snatching the hairpin: "Such a beautiful hairpin! Who gave it to you?"

Li Zixin walked over and playfully added, "Of course, it was my future brother-in-law."

Seeing the two teasing her, Li Zixuan could no longer hold back and stood up, pretending to chase after them to hit them.

Daohua and Li Zixin quickly ran away while continuing to joke, leaving Li Zixuan blushing in embarrassment.

After a while, the three of them were out of breath and stopped.

Daohua set the hairpin down and sat beside Li Zixuan, taking her hand and asking, "Sister Zixuan, you really like that Fang Liangji, don’t you?"

Li Zixuan immediately spat, "Nonsense! Don’t talk like that. Stop saying such nonsense."

Seeing her shy expression, Daohua silently smiled. It seemed like she did like him.

It was understandable—before truly understanding someone’s personality and values, attraction mostly comes from appearance.

Fang Liangji was handsome and elegant, making it easy for girls to develop affection for him.

Seeing how embarrassed Zixuan was, Daohua smiled and changed the subject: "I heard that today, the Fang family sent a lot of people and gave such generous bridal gifts, it seems they really value you."

Li Zixuan smiled and tapped Daohua’s forehead: "You little rascal! There’s no need to tease me. In two years, it will be your turn."

Daohua shivered and quickly moved aside: "I’m still too young. My mother said I need to stay at home for a few more years."

Li Zixuan laughed: "Even if they keep you at home for a few more years, you’ll still end up getting married eventually."

Daohua didn’t want to continue this topic and quickly said, "Zixuan, don’t talk about that. After the Flower Festival, I’ll be leaving. Let me have a few more fun days!"

The Flower Festival in Zhongzhou was held on the 25th of February. Two days ago, Dong Yuanyao had sent an invitation to attend the temple fair at the Flower Goddess Temple on the day of the festival. Originally, Daohua had planned to leave for Ningmen Prefecture tomorrow, but since Dong Yuanyao had invited her, she agreed to stay an extra three days.

Li Zixin chimed in: "Sister, let’s go together that day."

Daohua immediately nodded: "Yes, I’ve been here for over half a month and haven’t seen you go out yet."

Li Zixuan seemed tempted: "I need to ask Mother and Aunt first."

Li Zixin smiled: "They are also going for the spring outing that day."

The Flower Goddess Temple was located on the outskirts of the provincial capital.

On the day of the Flower Festival, Fan Shi took Daohua and the others out early, but they didn’t arrive at the temple until the fourth quarter of the hour (around 10 AM).

Dong Yuanyao had already arrived. As soon as Daohua and the others entered the temple, she approached them, greeted Fan Shi and Jiang Shi, and then asked, "Why are you so late?"

Daohua replied, "Don’t even mention it. There were so many people out today that we got stuck halfway."

Dong Yuanyao smiled, "That must mean you left late. We didn’t get stuck when we left the city." She then lifted a piece of colorful paper in her hand. "Come, let’s paste the paper."

Daohua glanced at Fan Shi, who nodded in agreement, so they followed Dong Yuanyao into the garden.

In the garden, flowers were blooming everywhere. Young ladies from various families flitted among the flowers like butterflies. In the distance, a few refined young men could be seen sitting in a pavilion, sipping tea, composing poetry, and enjoying each other’s company.

After pasting the colorful paper, the four of them strolled through the garden, chatting and admiring the flowers.

In the middle of their walk, Li Zixin, in her hurry, twisted her ankle and had to be sent back to Fan Shi and Jiang Shi.

"You go ahead and have fun. I’ll stay here with Zixin," Li Zixuan said, smiling.

Li Zixin added, "Yes, go and enjoy the flowers. Big Sister, you should go too. You rarely get out. Don’t let me spoil your fun."

Li Zixuan shook her head: "I’ve walked around enough and am a bit tired, so I’ll stay here."

Seeing that the two of them were content, Daohua smiled and left with Dong Yuanyao.

"I heard there are peonies blooming at the eastern corner of the garden. Shall we go take a look?" Daohua asked.

"Sure!" Dong Yuanyao eagerly agreed.

The two of them playfully headed toward the eastern corner of the garden.

"Look, there really are peonies!" Dong Yuanyao exclaimed as they turned the corner and saw several pots of blooming peonies in the distance. She immediately pulled Daohua over.

However, when she tugged, Daohua didn’t move.

Turning around, she saw Daohua frowning, staring at the pavilion not far away.

Dong Yuanyao followed her gaze and was immediately surprised: "Isn’t that the young man from the Fang family whom Sister Zixuan just got engaged to?"

In the pavilion, Fang Liangji was sitting with three or four young men, talking and laughing. Several young ladies were standing nearby. One in a pink dress was feeding Fang Liangji some pastries.

It wasn’t just handing them to him—she was directly feeding them to his mouth.

Though Fang Liangji appeared reluctant, he didn’t outright refuse.

Seeing this, Daohua’s brow furrowed.

Dong Yuanyao snorted, "This is how merchant families behave—no manners or decorum." The pink-clad young lady was practically pressed against Fang Liangji.

In the pavilion...

"Fang, take another piece! This is the sticky rice cake I made for you yesterday," said Sun Jiayue, as she placed a piece of cake in Fang Liangji's mouth.

Fang Liangji looked a little impatient, wanting to refuse, but fearing to embarrass his friend Sun Yongyi, he had to swallow it reluctantly.

Fang Hao stood with his hands behind his back, looking on from the side, his expression darkening as he saw this scene: "Liangji, if you don’t want it, just say so. Don’t force yourself to eat and ruin your stomach."

Fang Liangji’s expression changed, wanting to spit it out, but not wanting to appear impolite, he reluctantly swallowed it. Before he could respond, one of his companions spoke up in astonishment.

"They always say people are more beautiful than flowers, but I never believed it until now. Finally, I’ve seen such a stunning woman!"

As he gazed at the back, the group turned around, and instantly, two graceful figures—one in red, the other in blue—captured everyone’s attention.

Fang Hao, sensing the sudden silence in the pavilion, turned to look, his gaze turning deep.

"Cough, cough!"

Suddenly, a loud cough interrupted the silence.

It was none other than Fang Liangji.

The sticky rice cake had been too sticky, and he had choked on it.

Sun Jiayue quickly moved to help him pat his back, but to her surprise, Fang Liangji avoided her like a startled rabbit.

"Why are you two standing here?" a voice came from behind. Daohua and Dong Yuanyao quickly turned around and saw it was Xiao Yeyang and his group.

Daohua shot a glance at the pavilion, then snorted, "Just watching a good show."

Li Zhenliang immediately asked, "What good show? Where is it? I want to see too."

Daohua gave him a sideways glance: "Fourth Brother, you probably don’t have the talent for acting."

Xiao Yeyang, surprised, looked at Daohua.

The atmosphere felt tense. Who had made her angry? He looked up at the pavilion.

At that moment, Fang Hao from the pavilion was already walking over, with Fang Liangji trailing behind him.

"Jiguang Fang Hao greets His Royal Highness."

Chapter 287: Speechless

 Chapter 287: Speechless

After applying the medicine to Dong Yuanyao’s eyes, Daohua and her group left the side courtyard and returned to their respective homes.

In the carriage, Daohua looked at Yan Wentao. "Third Brother, why did you come to the capital?"

Yan Wentao answered, "Big Brother and Fourth Brother are not at the academy, so His Highness the Prince asked me to come with him."

Daohua then asked, "So, did you all go to the brothel because of His Highness’s suggestion?"

Yan Wentao shook his head. "No, it was Hongxin. He said that we were all grown up, and it was time to go and see the brothel."

Daohua continued, "So, what did you do once you were there?"

Yan Wentao replied, "We didn’t do much. Hongxin ordered the courtesan to accompany us, and he also called a few of the top girls."

Cough cough~

Li Chenyi suddenly started coughing loudly, casting a bewildered glance at Yan Wentao.

This Third Brother of his, why is he answering so honestly to his cousin’s questions? Can you talk about these things with a young lady?

Yan Wentao noticed Li Chenyi’s hint and immediately stopped talking.

Seeing this, Daohua was silent for a moment before looking at Li Chenyi with concern. "Cousin, are you feeling sick?"

Li Chenyi forced a smile. "No, it's just a bit of a sore throat. A few coughs and I’ll be fine."

Daohua nodded, her expression serious. "Though it’s not a big problem, you should still be careful. When we get back, go see a physician. If you keep coughing like this, it’s not just going to disturb our conversation, but if any elders are around, it’ll come off as disrespectful and improper."

Li Chenyi’s smile froze, and he was left speechless, looking at his cousin with a bit of astonishment.

The others in the carriage lowered their heads, stifling their laughter.

Afterward, Daohua didn’t bring up the brothel anymore, instead focusing on asking Yan Wentao about the family matters.

"The large gifts have already been taken care of by Second Uncle and sent to Ningmen prefecture."

"Uncle will be returning to Xingzhou in the next couple of days. After handing over the position to the new Prefect Magistrate, he’ll go directly to Ningmen Prefecture to take up his post."

"Once Aunt finishes packing up, she and Grandmother will also go to Ningmen Prefecture."

Daohua listened carefully, and soon the carriage arrived at the restaurant where Li Zixin was staying. "I’m going to call cousin Zixin. You all wait here."

Once Daohua got out of the carriage, Li Chenliang couldn’t help but comment, "Your little sister’s tongue is really sharp. Just now, she left Big Brother speechless."

Yan Wentao looked over. "Just a reminder, don’t provoke my little sister. She’s not someone who will take the loss. Even if she has to back down, she’ll find a way to make up for it later. His Highness the Prince has only ever lost to her."

Upon hearing this, Li Chenyi’s gaze flickered, and he casually said, "It seems like His Highness the Prince and your little sister have a pretty good relationship!"

Yan Wentao smirked proudly. "Of course, just look at who’s sister she is."

Seeing this, Li Chenyi was once again left speechless. He couldn’t help but sigh internally. Talking to his cousin was really exhausting.

You have to be very clear and direct in saying what you mean, or he won’t understand. Answering a question with an answer that makes sense, only to have him go off-topic and make it all more complicated.

Soon, Daohua returned with Li Zixin.

The two of them got into the carriage, and they headed to the Li residence.

As they neared the Li residence, Daohua couldn’t help but remind them, "You must make sure to explain what happened at the theater properly. Otherwise, I might tell everyone about your trip to the brothel."

Upon hearing Daohua’s tone of threat, Li Chenyi helplessly nodded. "Don’t worry, I’ll tell my parents that we took you to the theater, and the fight was started by someone else. Your injuries were just an accident."

This was the story Daohua had discussed with Dong Yuanyao earlier.

It couldn’t be helped. The patrol officers had arrested people, causing a big scene, and their faces were injured. They couldn’t hide it, so they had to downplay it. This way, they wouldn’t face too severe a punishment.

Seeing Daohua looking out of the carriage curtain frequently, Yan Wentao couldn’t help but say, "Big sister, you don’t need to worry. Uncle and Aunt won’t punish you. If you want, I can take your place—"

Before he could finish, Daohua raised her hand to interrupt. "Fourth Brother, I appreciate your kindness, but please, when we see Uncle and Aunt later, don’t speak. I’m afraid if you open your mouth, you’ll ruin the story we’ve prepared."

"Poof~"

Li Zixin couldn’t hold back and laughed.

This cousin is like that—whenever he opens his mouth, nothing stays hidden.

Yan Wentao snorted. "I didn’t want to say anything."

Before long, they arrived at the Li family’s residence.

After Li Chenyi explained everything to Li Xingnian, Li Xingchang, and the two matriarchs, they nodded in understanding and didn’t say much. They simply told Daohua and the others to go rest.

Seeing how easily it was handled, Daohua was somewhat surprised. She pulled Li Zixin aside. "Cousin Zixin, do you think Uncle and Aunt believe us?"

Li Zixin also seemed unsure. Her parents had been much easier to talk to this time.

Daohua sighed. "Well, as long as we’re not punished, I’m fine with it."

After Daohua and the others left, Li Xingnian turned to Li Chenyi. "Now, tell me what really happened."

Li Chenyi sighed. He knew he couldn’t hide it from his parents and his second uncle and aunt, so he told them everything that had happened that day.

After hearing that Daohua had gone to the theater to investigate Fang Liangji, Li Xingchang immediately smiled. "Daohua really didn’t disappoint."

Li Xingnian shot him a glare. "Don’t be so flippant. A young girl going to the theater and even fighting—if your sister finds out, she’ll definitely lecture us about it."

Fang Shi laughed. "Alright, I see Daohua knows what she’s doing. However, today’s actions were wrong. She should be punished."

Jiang Shi added, "Daohua likes to play, so punish her by not letting her go out before Zixuan’s engagement."

Fang Shi immediately agreed, "That’s a good idea."

So, not long after returning to Li Zixuan’s courtyard, Daohua received a message from Fang Shi.

"Miss, the madam says you’re not allowed to go out these days."

Upon hearing this, Daohua slumped on the desk. "I knew I couldn’t escape. Aunt’s punishment is so harsh, directly grounding me!"

Seeing Daohua’s dejected expression, Li Zixuan and Li Zixin couldn’t help but laugh.

Before long, it was time for the Fang family to send the official engagement gifts to the Li family.

Hearing the sounds of bustling outside, Daohua and Li Zixin stood in the inner courtyard, watching as the servants brought in the engagement gifts.

"The Fang family seems quite wealthy."

Li Zixin nodded. "How could they not be wealthy? The Fang family in Zhongzhou is one of the top merchant families. My father was surprised when he heard that my elder sister was getting engaged to their eldest son."

Daohua sighed. "It’s a pity. Last time, I went to the theater, but I still couldn’t figure out what kind of person Fang Liangji is."

Li Zixin smiled. "You’re still thinking about that? My mother said that on the third day after we returned, Fang’s wife bumped into my mother and Second Aunt at the jewelry store. She personally explained why Fang Liangji was at the theater."

"He didn’t go to the theater on purpose. He was there to pick up his uncle, who was watching the performance."

"My mother said the Fang family comes from the Ji Guang Fang clan. Compared to other merchant families, they pay more attention to rules. Second Uncle agreed to the engagement because he values that."

Daohua nodded. This was actually a good thing. In this era of arranged marriages, marrying into a family that values rules and propriety is better than marrying into a family that lacks them.

Chapter 286: Half a Dozen, Half a Dozen

Chapter 286: Half a Dozen, Half a Dozen

At first, Daohua didn’t intend to investigate the source of the fragrance, but seeing the awkward expression on Xiao Yeyang's face, her eyes flashed. "The scent is coming from you?"

They were standing quite close. After saying that, Daohua tilted her head and leaned toward Xiao Yeyang to sniff him.

Xiao Yeyang initially wanted to step away, but his gaze swept across, and he caught sight of Daohua's fair and graceful neck. For a moment, he froze in place. At the same time, images of the exposed, plump skin of the courtesans he had accompanied at the brothel flashed through his mind. His ears and neck instantly turned red.

"So it really is the fragrance from you!"

Daohua quickly confirmed the source of the smell and stared at Xiao Yeyang in disbelief. "Xiao Yeyang, you’re a grown man, why are you wearing such strong perfume? If you must wear it, at least have some taste, don’t use something so overpowering." She fanned her hand in front of her nose, clearly disgusted.

Xiao Yeyang snapped back to his senses and saw Daohua looking at him strangely. He couldn’t bring himself to look her in the eye, so he turned away from her. "Who’s wearing perfume?"

He muttered in frustration, cursing himself inwardly. What was he even thinking?

Daohua noticed his unease, folded her arms, stroked her chin, and walked over to him with a curious expression. "Where did this fragrance come from? And why are your ears red? Are you embarrassed?"

As soon as she said that, Xiao Yeyang looked like he had stepped on a cat’s tail. He hurriedly said, "Who’s embarrassed? Yan Yiyi, stop spouting nonsense!"

He awkwardly stepped back.

Seeing Xiao Yeyang like this, Daohua didn’t think much of it and assumed she had struck a nerve. She pouted and said, "You can deny it all you want, but you’re clearly guilty!"

After a pause, she furrowed her brows. "No, wait a minute. You usually care about your appearance. You wouldn’t use such perfume. You didn’t wear it yourself, so it must’ve rubbed off from someone else."

Recalling that they had encountered Xiao Yeyang and his group on Anle Street earlier, Daohua's eyes widened. She glared at him in disbelief. "You... you guys went to a brothel, didn’t you?"

Xiao Yeyang, feeling guilty and awkward, stumbled backward. "Uh, I just remembered, I’ve got something to do, I better go!"

Daohua grabbed his sleeve angrily. "Did you go to a brothel?!"

Xiao Yeyang was both embarrassed and guilty. "Well, we just went inside to sit for a while, we didn’t do anything else."

Daohua was infuriated and laughed sarcastically. "What else would you do? Xiao Yeyang, tell me, how old are you and you're visiting brothels? Do you know how shameful that is?"

Xiao Yeyang felt a headache coming on. He should’ve changed his clothes before stepping out.

Daohua paused for a moment, then, recalling Xiao Yeyang’s family background, she spoke to him with a tone that seemed almost like a concerned elder. "Xiao Yeyang, I know you don’t have elders around you, so you might be a bit careless, but some things you just can’t do. You’re still young. You should focus on serious matters and not let distractions take over your mind."

"Brothels, what kind of place is that? Yes, the women there are quite beautiful, I admit, but you don’t know the kind of people who go there, and who knows what diseases they might carry."

Seeing Daohua speaking to him in this manner, and her argument growing increasingly ridiculous, Xiao Yeyang couldn’t take it any longer. He pulled his sleeve away forcefully. "I told you, we just went to sit down."

Daohua raised her voice. "Just sitting isn’t enough! At your age, you have no self-control and are easily impulsive. You can’t resist temptation!"

"Enough!" Xiao Yeyang couldn’t bear to listen anymore. He took several deep breaths. "You’re spending all your time criticizing me, why don’t you go talk to your two brothers? Your Fourth Brother drank a lot of wine at the brothel."

To escape the situation, Xiao Yeyang shamelessly threw Yan Wenkai and Yan Wentao under the bus.

Sure enough, when Daohua heard this, her face immediately darkened. She clenched her fists, making a cracking sound. "Hmph, I’ll talk to them when we get home."

At that moment, seeing Xiao Yeyang still not returning, Dong Yuanxuan and the others came out of the living room, planning to enjoy the scenery in the courtyard. When they came out, they saw Daohua and Xiao Yeyang standing there.

"What are you two doing here?"

Yan Wenkai smiled and walked over, but when he got closer, he noticed the strange tension between his sister and Xiao Yeyang. His sister was glaring at them with her brows furrowed, while Xiao Yeyang looked guilty.

Daohua hurried over to Yan Wenkai and Yan Wentao and sniffed their clothes. "You guys are really something, learning to visit brothels instead of learning something useful!"

At the sound of this, everyone froze, and the awkwardness was palpable.

Daohua glared at Yan Wenkai and Yan Wentao. "Just wait, I’ll tell Father and Mother when we get home."

Yan Wenkai immediately panicked. "Big Sister, don’t! Didn’t you go to the theater today too?"

Daohua replied, "I went to the theater to investigate Fang Liangji’s conduct, not to drink flower wine. There’s a big difference, okay?"

Yan Wenkai muttered, "What difference? We’re all the same. Don’t talk like you’re any better. How about this: if you don’t tell on us, we won’t mention how you fought at the theater."

At this, Daohua’s eyes lit up, her face showing some interest.

Just then, Defu came in with eggs.

Xiao Yeyang hurriedly said, "You’re supposed to be treating Miss Dong’s eyes, go ahead!"

Daohua took the eggs from him. "I’ll go talk to Yuanyao and see if we should cooperate with you guys."

Once she left, Xiao Yeyang and the others sighed in relief.

Yan Wenkai looked at Xiao Yeyang, accusing him. "Your Highness, did you sell us out?"

Xiao Yeyang rolled his eyes. "You can smell the perfume on yourselves, do you need me to sell you out?"

Everyone raised their arms and sniffed.

Su Hongxin commented, "It seems like we picked up some rouge scent from the women at the brothel."

Yan Wenkai immediately responded, "Of course, it’s not like the courtesans didn’t sit right in your lap."

Su Hongxin snorted, "Don’t talk about me, you weren’t any better, you were fed several drinks by them."

Yan Wenkai protested, "How was I supposed to know they would be so forward? If I had known, I would’ve pushed them away. I thought they were weak and frail." Then, after a pause, he added, "Next time, I’ll learn from Xiao Yeyang, just keep a straight face and nobody will dare approach."

He then looked at Yan Wentao, suddenly recalling something, and laughed, "Or we could learn from Third Brother, stretch out our arms and throw the women off us. Remember when you threw one into the ground?"

Everyone burst into laughter.

Yan Wentao looked embarrassed, scratching his head. "I didn’t expect her to be that light."

Su Hongxin laughed heartily. "We’re all clueless when it comes to romance, it’s only Yuanxuan and Chenyi who are gentler."

Dong Yuanxuan shot him a sideways glance. "Don’t drag me into this. I only exchanged a few poems, I didn’t even drink."

Yan Wenkai was confused. "Seriously, I don’t get it. The women at the brothel are just like that, so why do men still like to go there?"

Li Chenyi looked at his confused cousin and couldn’t help but laugh.
